CHARDON, OHIO: A judge in Ohio is giving defense attorneys more time to complete psychological evaluations of a teenager charged with killing three students in a high school cafeteria shooting.
The judge on Monday told attorneys for 17-year-old T.J. Lane that they will have until the end of September to finish the tests and decide whether to change the teen’s not guilty plea. His attorneys are considering entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity instead.
Lane has been charged with aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault in the Feb. 27 shootings at Chardon High School. He could face life in prison if convicted.
Last week, the teen’s attorneys asked a judge to move the trial because the community east of Cleveland is still grief-stricken by the shootings.
