SPRINGFIELD TWP.: After searching for more than six hours, rescuers recovered the body of a teenage boy from Springfield Lake on Wednesday afternoon.
Divers found the body of Camden Cole, 16, in 10 feet of water about 100 feet from shore at 11:20 a.m. His body was taken to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The boy was found in the area where a massive search was conducted Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Camden, a student at Springfield High School, was swimming with a cousin Tuesday evening when he became distressed, police said. The 16-year-old Springfield High School junior was unable to continue swimming and went missing under the water about 7:30 p.m., Sgt. Eric East said.
The other boy made it safely to shore.
Rescue and dive teams from surrounding agencies came to the scene in an effort to find the missing teen.
Divers used sonar scanning boats to search the area for several hours to no avail. East said the search ended about 11 p.m. because of darkness, diver fatigue and lightning in the area.
Sonar scans of the area continued through the night.
East said it appears Camden and his cousin were on a private dock when they started to swim toward a buoy about 500 feet away.
He said Camden’s family said he was a good swimmer.
“At this point, we don’t know why he became distressed,” East said.
Swimming is banned at the lake except from private property or boats. There has not been a drowning there since 1983. There are no lifeguards at the lake.
“This is not common,” East said of the drowning.
Rescuers kept the Cole family, described as “strong and close-knit,” apprised of the recovery efforts. The family remained near the search area and walked the shoreline in the hopes of finding the teen.
“On behalf of all of us, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Cole family in this great time of sorrow,” East said in prepared statement after the boy’s body was recovered. “The prayers of the entire community go out to them, and to all of those touched by this terrible tragedy.”
A longtime friend of the Cole family began an online fundraising effort — http://www.gofundme.com/ayqr4s — on Wednesday at gofundme.com. More than $2,300 had been raised in the first few hours.
Family friend Gary Finnan said he created the fund to help Camden’s parents, Scott and Tammy, and the rest of the family.
“You couldn’t ask for a better bunch of people to be friends and family with,” Fannin said.
