Threat of flooding closes Cleveland Zoo

Beacon Journal staff report

CLEVELAND: Cleveland Metroparks Zoo closed Tuesday due to the threat of flooding from Big Creek, which runs through the zoo property and the Brookside Reservation valley.

The extensive amount of rain caused by Superstorm Sandy’s weather system has brought water in Big Creek close to flood level. The decision to close the zoo was made in the interest of keeping guests out of harm’s way and allowing zoo personnel to concentrate on weather-related issues, park officials said in a statement.

Barring unforeseen circumstances related to storm damage or flooding, the zoo is expected to reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Updates will be posted at www.clemetzoo.com and on the zoo’s Facebook page.
