Akron police arrested three men accused of awakening residents during a small fire and then burglarizing an Everton Drive apartment.
The suspects were arrested by Akron police detectives on charges of entering the apartment in the early morning hours Saturday and taking $300 in cash and an XBox 360 game console and games.
The fire initially happened in a seventh-floor unit shortly after 1 a.m. inside 1221 Everton Drive, a high-rise apartment complex off Vernon Odom Boulevard.
Firefighters say the kitchen fire was minor and quickly contained. Residents on the eighth and sixth floors were alerted. Upper and lower floors did not have to be evacuated. However, according to a police report, one 12th-floor resident told police a man knocked on her door and told her to leave her apartment because of a fire.
When she resisted, the man tried to get inside, but she closed the door before he could. Later, another 12th-floor resident said she returned to her apartment to find it was burglarized after she left her unit during the fire.
Police arrested the three later Saturday afternoon. Darshawn McCraney, 25, and Donald A. Turner, 20, who lived at the Everton Drive complex, and Jasmar L. Austin, 25, were being held on burglary charges.
Police say the three admitted burglarizing the woman’s apartment.
