RAVENNA: A Portage County man is in custody, charged with the fatal Christmas Day shooting of his nephew in Windham Township.
Portage County Sheriff David W. Doak said Thursday that Joseph E. Thornton, 48, of South Chapel Street, Windham Township, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Doak said dispatchers received a call around 10:50 p.m. Christmas night from a relative of Jason Canan, 39, fearing the man was in harm’s way.
The caller told dispatchers that “he had been told that Jason may have been shot” inside the South Chapel Street home he shared with his uncle.
Sheriff’s deputies along with officers from the Garrettsville Police Department responded to the home and found Canan’s body inside.
Doak said the investigation is ongoing and his department is being assisted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation in processing evidence gathered from the home.
Thornton was charged with murder. He was being held in the Portage County Jail.
Thornton is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:15 p.m. today.
Doak did not disclose what may have led to the shooting.
