Smithville: The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a 9-year-old girl who was discovered Sunday in a trash bin near her home just north of Smithville.
Jerrod Metsker, 24, is expected to be charged with aggravated murder today, the sheriff’s department reported in a news conference Sunday. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail.
Metsker lives in the same mobile home park where Reann Murphy lived, and reportedly knew her family.
Reann was reported missing Saturday evening. She was last seen at 5:30 p.m. playing outdoors in a shared area of the property, off Akron Road.
Deputies searched the area with the help of area firefighters, other law enforcement officers and volunteers, and found her body about 1:35 a.m. Sunday in a trash bin.
The sheriff’s department, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Wayne County coroner are investigating the case as a homicide.
“Any violent death is troubling, but the death of a child is much more so. We will leave no stone unturned as this investigation continues,” Sheriff Travis Hutchinson said in a news release.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the sheriff’s department at 330-287-5750.
