Waiters doubtful for Saturday's home game vs. Detroit
MINNEAPOLIS: Rookie Dion Waiters will not play in Friday's game at Minnesota and Cavs coach Byron Scott doesn't expect him to play Saturday night at home against the Detroit Pistons, either.
Saturday marks a week since Waiters sprained his left ankle in a double-overtime loss to Portland. He was originally listed as day to day, and most of the swelling is out of the ankle, but Scott said Waiters is still dealing with a bone bruise and some pain. The game against the Pistons would mark the fourth Waiters has missed with the injury.
"He wants to try to play tomorrow, I just don't see it," Scott said. It isn't a mandatory rule, but Scott typically likes players returning from injury to get at least one practice in before playing in a game. Waiters' next chance at a practice would be Monday, so if Scott holds firm, Waiters wouldn't return until Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers at the earliest.
Waitersdid not make the trip to Minneapolis so he could stay in Cleveland and work with the medical staff. He is expected to complete two more sessions of physical therapy on the ankle Friday.
"The other day he said he couldn't really cut," Scott said. "Obviously with the way he plays, he needs to be able to plant and cut and move. We'll see how he feels Sunday and go from there."
