Wayne County man sentenced to prison for his role in Barberton meth lab blast

Beacon Journal staff report

A Doylestown man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of illegal manufacture of drugs, authorities said.

Joseph B. Witte, 41, of Wall Road, in Doylestown, was charged by Summit County prosecutors along with two co-defendants in connection with an Oct. 8 explosion of a methamphetamine lab at a home on 8th Street NW in Barberton.

The blast shattered the basement windows and Witte fled the scene as police arrived. No one inside the home was injured, police said.

Common Pleas Judge Christine Croce handled the case.

Witte had been scheduled for trial Feb. 26 on the first-degree felony charge.
