The Akron RubberDucks minor-league baseball team said Monday the name of the franchise’s new duck mascot is Webster — a nod to the creature’s webbed feet.
Webster the RubberDuck will make his official debut prior to Thursday’s home opener against the Bowie Baysox at 6:35 p.m.
He will join Orbit the space cat and Homer the pigeon as the official mascots of the RubberDucks.
Nominations for the new mascot’s name took place from March 17-25. From March 27 to April 4, fans voted online from five finalists: Bill, Quackers, Rubberto, Tread and Webster, which was selected as the winning name with more than 4,000 votes.
Melanie Feltoon from Twinsburg was among those who nominated the name Webster, and her name was chosen at random from those who did. She will receive two 2014 season tickets and a chance to participate in Webster’s official unveiling on opening night.
Activities on Thursday include the Main Street Festival, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. in front of Canal Park on South Main Street. Fans can hear live music, see fire-breathers, get their faces painted and more before gates open.
“We think Webster will be a hit for fans of all ages,” RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander said. “We look forward to welcoming Webster to our family of mascots, including Orbit and Homer, and continuing to provide the best in affordable, family entertainment in Northeast Ohio.”
