West Salem man killed inside burning car stuck in snow

Beacon Journal staff report

A West Salem man was found dead inside a car that caught fire Saturday when he accelerated the engine in an effort to free it from snow.

The body of Scott Hinerman, 47, was found inside his vehicle Saturday night in the 7800 block of Ruff Road.

Witnesses told Wayne County sheriff’s deputies that Hinerman was angry and possibly intoxicated just before crashing his car into a tree and fence about 10 p.m.

Deputies say it appears Hinerman was attempting to free his vehicle by “aggressively rocking” it by repeatedly accelerating the engine. The movement likely sparked a fire.

Witnesses called 911, and firefighters extinguished the flames and found Hinerman still inside.

Sheriff’s deputies, the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
