Bars cited for serving 17-year-old involved in crash

By Beacon Journal staff report

Two Summit County bars have been cited for alcohol sales to a 17-year-old driver involved in a serious auto accident in Boston Heights.

An investigative arm of the state's Department of Public Safety cited Brubaker's Pub at 4005 Medina Road in Bath Township and Rose Lounge at 3219 Copley Road in Copley Township for serving a minor.

The legal drinking age in Ohio is 21.

The Boston Heights Police Department requested the state's involvement in trying to determine how the 17-year-old girl was able to consume alcoholic beverages prior to the crash in September on state Route 8 in which another person was seriously injured.

''Bar owners need to understand they can be cited for contributing to over-serving and serving underage individuals,'' Cathy Collins-Taylor, executive director of the public safety department's Ohio Investigative Unit, said in a prepared statement released today

A woman answering the phone at Brubaker's corporate offices said company officials declined to comment. Brubaker's operates eight bars in the area. A woman answering the phone at Rose Lounge declined to comment.
