Zoo attendance up by more than 6,000 visitors

By Beacon Journal staff report

In its fifth straight year of setting an attendance record, the Akron Zoo saw an increase of more than 6,000 visitors in 2007.

The zoo tallied a total of 262,217 visitors last year, surpassing the 2006 attendance record of 255,804.

Zoo officials attribute the increase in part to new animal exhibits, animal births and the Boo at the Zoo Halloween program.

Last spring, the zoo introduced a new pair of lions and welcomed four Humboldt penguin chicks. Boo at the Zoo, which ran eight nights, hosted 18,700 visitors.
