A Ravenna High School basketball coach and former Kent State University basketball standout has been arrested and charged with rape.
Police said 28-year-old Eric Thomas kicked in the front door of the home last Friday and assaulted a male then raped the female owner of the home.
Thomas, of Ravenna, was arrested by police and is being held on a $500,000 bond in the Portage County jail.
A banner recognizing Thomas' retired jersey at Kent State was removed from the university's M.A.C. Center, according to a statement released today by Kent State Athletic Director Laing Kennedy.
``Once the allegations have been resolved through the legal system, we will reevaluate our position on reinstating Eric's banner,'' Kennedy said in the statement. ``However, at this time it is in the best interest of everyone concerned, particularly at Kent State University, that the banner be removed,'' Kennedy said.
Thomas, a member of KSU's class of 2002, was among four former KSU Golden Flashes who had their jerseys sent to the rafters of the M.A.C. during the halftime of a KSU basketball game in February 2003.
In their tenure at the school, the four helped lead the KSU Golden Flashes to three Mid-American Conference titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and a 30-6 record with and Elite Eight appearance in 2002.
