EPA grant OK'd for Canton Local school buses

By Beacon Jouranl staff report

CANTON TWP.: The Canton Local School District is getting a $154,848 federal grant to cut diesel emissions from the district's school buses.

The money from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus USA program will be used to retrofit 24 buses with filters to reduce diesel emissions and to help replace two polluting 1988 school buses.

Diesel exhaust poses a risk to students and contributes to ozone and soot problems.

Canton Local is the first district in the Akron-Canton area to get federal funds for school bus retrofitting.

The Revere Local School District in Summit County last fall got a $57,354 grant from the Ohio EPA to retrofit 25 buses.
