Second man arrested in coin theft

By Beacon Journal staff report

A second man has been charged with stealing coins from Chet's Coins in Akron.

Michael J. Patton, 38, of Seven Hills, was arrested Wednesday and charged with breaking and entering, felony theft and safecracking in connection with the Dec. 16, theft of nearly $750,000 in collector coins from the Carnegie Street coin shop.

Prior to Patton's arrest Kevin J. Hartman, 37, of Parma was arrested and charged with the theft. Police said the pair used a torch to cut open a safe to get at the coins.

The coins were discovered behind an attic wall in a Lakewood house owned by Hartman's brother and sister-in-law, Howard Trower, 38. The Trowers were arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.
