State Sen. Kevin Coughlin is challenging Summit County Republican Chairman Alex Arshinkoff to a debate before the March 4 primary.
Coughlin, who is leading an attempt to unseat Arshinkoff by gaining a majority on the party's central committee in the March 4 primary, said the debate would be handled by a respected community organization or media outlet. He proposed no substitutions for himself or Arshinkoff in the debate.
Arshinkoff, however, said he doesn't think it's Coughlin he should debate. Instead, he said he should go up against whoever Coughlin has in mind to replace him.
Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, has not said who his candidate to head the party would be.
The county party's central committee will meet 60 days after the primary to decide the party's leadership.
