BOSTON HEIGHTS: Police Sgt. Raymond L. Heatwall was making a traffic stop on state Route 8 near state Route 303 early Saturday when he escaped serious injury.
The officer was checking traffic as he got out of his cruiser to speak with a motorist when he saw a car coming straight at him at a high speed. The officer jumped back into his vehicle before the approaching car struck the cruiser.
Heatwall, who was not injured, radioed for backup.
Police chased the vehicle east on the Ohio Turnpike. The vehicle crashed through the toll gates in Boston Heights and also in Streetsboro when the driver exited the turnpike.
The car was stopped by Streetsboro and Boston Heights police at Interstate 480 and Frost Road in Streetsboro.
Driver Anthony Seawell, 41, of Evington, Va., was arrested, said Boston Heights Police Chief Joseph A. Varga III.
Seawell was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, fleeing and failing to stop for an emergency vehicle.
Seawell told officers that he thought he had struck a pothole, not Heatwall's cruiser, Varga said.
Varga said Heatwall's ''alertness saved his life.''
