Local musher drops out of Iditarod

By Kim Hone-McMahan
Beacon Journal staff writer

Shreve resident Tom Roig, a musher in Alaska's Iditarod, has scratched from the race. A Tuesday entry in his online journal (http://www.valleyroadoutfitters.com) states he dropped out for health reasons.

Last year, on his first attempt, a broken sled about 200 miles into the race caused Roig to scratch.

Media from all over the world cover the Iditarod, which is to Alaskans what the World Series is to the rest of the nation.

The difficult race commemorates the serum run in 1925 to help those in Nome who were suffering from diphtheria. The weather was too bad for air travel, so the lifesaving medicine was delivered on the final leg of the emergency mission by dog teams.
