Bill O'Neill, Democratic candidate for Ohio's 14th Congressional District, underwent successful heart bypass surgery this morning, according to a news release issued by his campaign manager.
Routine tests on Monday morning showed blockage in three arteries, prompting cardiologists to schedule surgery, campaign manager Toby Fallsgraff said.
The surgery was performed at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights.
''We have every reason to believe that Bill should be able to make a full recovery and should be back on the campaign trail very soon,'' Dr. Mark Rood, O'Neill's physician, said in the news release.
The district covers all of Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties and parts of Summit, Portage, Cuyahoga and Trumbull counties.
O'Neill, a retired appeals judge, is 60 years old. He lives in South Russell in Geauga.
He was the easy winner in the March 4 primary election, in which he squared off against two Democrats for the right to face Republican Steven LaTourette on Nov. 4.
The losing Democrats were union activist John H. Green Jr., 61, of Ashtabula County, and accountant Dale V. Blanchard, 50, of Solon.
