Man, 12 youths charged in Massillon rapes

A Massillon man was indicted Thursday by a Stark County grand jury with rape and unlawful sexual contact involving two 12-year-old girls and a 14-year-old girl.

Calvin Smith, 22, of Massillon, has been charged with two counts of rape, one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor stemming from three separate incidents with three minor girls.

In addition to the charges against Smith, 12 individuals ages 13 to 17 are facing various juvenile charges, including rape, involving alleged consensual sexual activity with the same 12-year-old victims.

The charges following a lengthy investigation by Massillon police into reports of numerous incident of sexual activity involving the three underage girls.

Police said the investigation was initiated after a family member of one of the girls involved reported an incident in October 2007. During the investigation officers uncovered numerous sex-related incidents spanning an 11-month time frame.
