CLEVELAND: Neither Rohan Davey nor Bernie Kosar realized it at the time, but Davey, the former backup quarterback for the New York Dragons, was auditioning for the Gladiators when he appeared against them in the season opener March 3.
In relief of an injured Aaron Garcia, Davey hit on 21-of-30 passes for 249 yards and five touchdowns in the loss against the Gladiators. The Gladiators signed him as a free agent Thursday after the Dragons placed him on recallable waivers.
''Really, after watching the first game, watching him play and watching our New Orleans game when Ray went out, I liked Jose (Davis), but Rohan has a lot of ability,'' said Kosar, the Gladiators' president. ''And from talking to some of the mutual coaches, I think guys when they get to 25, 26, 27, it's that maturity level age. I think the way we do our system here, very structured and stuff I think is going to help him out.''
The New England Patriots drafted the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Davey in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He was player of the year in NFL Europe in 2004 and won two Super Bowls while with the Patriots. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals before arriving in the Arena Football League. He has enjoyed success, but he understands his role with the Gladiators.
''I'm just hoping to come in here and help, learn this playbook, really get into it and whenever they need me to go in and do my (thing),'' he said. ''I just want to help provide some depth and help. That's it.''
The move fills a glaring hole at the backup QB spot that revealed itself after starter Raymond Philyaw left the Voodoo game with an injured hand and his former backup, Jose Davis, didn't generate much in the way of offense.
Philyaw welcomed Davey's arrival and said that two quarterbacks is as much a necessity as in the AFL as the NFL.
''When you have two solid guys, yeah you're going to miss a beat from the No. 1 to the No. 2, but it won't be that much of a fall off. I feel comfortable with Rohan,'' he said. ''Me and Jose (Davis) were good buddies, but the coaches felt like they could improve the team and they did.
''They went out and got a guy who's been around the league and in the NFL, who's been in those big games and who can win it. I'm just trying to win at the end of the day.''
