McCain talks in Youngstown, pledges job training

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Sen. John McCain told an audience at Youngstown State University this afternoon that he can't bring back the steel mills that have closed in the Mahoning Valley.

But if elected president, the Republican candidate pledged to encourage training programs to help people get jobs in new, emerging industries.

''What I can get done is the necessary education to provide better jobs than your parents had,'' McCain told the audience of more than 300 during an hour-long town hall meeting.

Today's stop in this heavily Democratic city is part of McCain's Time for Action Tour, during which he is reaching out to people who don't normally identify with the Republican Party.

McCain will make one more stop in Ohio for a fund raiser in Toledo at 5 p.m.,

where tickets will be $1,000 or $2,300 — with a photo opportunity. He will travel Wednesday to the Appalachian region of Inez, Ky.
