Ohio's attorney general only one with Washington lobbyist

CLEVELAND: A newspaper investigation has found that Ohio's Marc Dann is the only state attorney general to employ a full-time lobbyist in Washington.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports today that Dann pays a former campaign worker $98,000 to bring more federal money home for Ohio.

Craig Mehall, who had no previous Washington experience, says he can lobby members of Congress on foreclosure and consumer-protection legislation. Mehall says a primary responsibility is to stay abreast of funding grants from the Department of Justice.

Mehall acknowledges his inexperience with Washington. He lobbied members of Congress to spend money on a proposed forensics crime lab in Cleveland, saying the Cleveland Clinic would probably contribute $35 million. But the hospital says it does not know where that figure came from.
