Akron schools name teacher of the year

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Dorothea Dingle, a 15-year educator, has been named Akron Public Schools' 2007-08 Teacher of the Year.

Dingle teaches special education to first- through fifth-graders at Stewart Elementary, Akron's Afrocentric school.

She was one of eight nominees.

District officials described Dingle as a motivated and compassionate teacher who thinks each student ''is an individual with a unique purpose in life.''

''Treating a child as a unique individual in the classroom is the best way to help them find success in learning,'' Dingle said. ''This allows me to connect with each student and foster a connection that transcends traditional teacher-student relationships.''

The other nominees were Joshua Allen, Goodyear Middle; Sandra Bradbury, Hyre Middle; Kimberly Dorsey, Resnik Elementary; Susan Hall, Jennings Middle; Diane MacBridge, Glover Elementary; David Skelton, Goodrich Middle, and Linda Ward, Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Carol Reagan of Case Elementary received the Marilyn Parks Lifetime Achievement Award.
