After heart surgery in March, candidate to run in race

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Bill O'Neill, the Democratic candidate for the 14th Congressional district who underwent bypass surgery in March, will run a 5.25-mile race Sunday.

O'Neill will take part in the Blossom Time Run in Chagrin Falls.

After O'Neill's surgery, he missed about four weeks on the campaign trail but returned to full-time stumping earlier this month. He also resumed his job as a registered nurse at Hillcrest Hospital, where his heart surgery was performed.

''My goal is just to finish before they take down the timer,'' O'Neill said in a news release.

O'Neill, a retired appeals judge, is 60 years old. He lives in South Russell in Geauga. He was the easy winner in the March 4 primary election, in which he squared off against two Democrats for the right to challenge U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette, a Republican, on Nov. 4.
