RAVENNA:A Portage County judge has denied a request by Paul H. Jones to have some free time between serving his federal and state prison sentences.
Common Pleas Judge John Enlow issued a written decision Wednesday after hearing the request by Jones' attorney, Terry Kane. In the one-page, three-paragraph decision, the judge called the motion ''not well taken.''
Jones, a former mayor and state representative convicted last year on corruption charges, is scheduled to be released July 3 from the Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, Fla., according to Kane. The attorney asked that Jones be allowed to self-report to state prison instead of having sheriff's deputies travel to Florida to retrieve him.
Jones wanted time to visit with family and see and dentist and doctor before starting to serve his 14-month state sentence, Kane said. He is completing a 16-month federal sentence.
Prosecutors opposed the move.
Jones, a former chair of the Portage County Democratic Party, was convicted last year in federal court on charges of mail fraud and filing false tax returns stemming from his operation of P.J. Jones Lawn Mowing Service. He also was convicted on state charges related to the business.
