Ohio soccer team wins opener at national tournament

The U17 Everest Soccer Club won its opening match Wednesday night at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Little Rock, Ark.

Everest, making its first trip to the national championships and the first appearance by a Northeast Ohio team since 1999, topped the FC Delco Hammerheads of Pennsylvania 4-2.

Evan McCreary and Jamie Dollar scored early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Everest also got goals from Stephen Grater late in the first half and from Mark Connell late in the second half.

The Hammerheads are making their third consecutive trip to the national championship.

Everest was scheduled to play Andromeda 91 of Texas on Thursday night, then Diablo FC of California on Friday. Andromeda beat Diablo 2-1 on Wednesday.

The championship, at 8 a.m. Sunday, will pit the two top teams after round-robin play.
