Update: Medina authorities find missing girl

By Beacon Journal staff report

CHIPPEWA LAKE: A Medina County 12-year-old girl missing since Thursday night was found safe this afternoon after knocking on the door of a house and telling a resident she was hungry.

Courtney Olexa, a special needs child who has a history of running away, showed up at the Chippewa Lake house around 5:30 a.m. today and told a 17-year-old girl that she was cold, hungry and tired, said county Sheriff's Lt. J.L. Detchon.

The 17-year-old gave the girl something to eat and then let her take a nap at the house. When the missing girl woke up, the 17-year-old said, ``We better go find your mother,'' Detchon said.

About 1:30 p.m. today, the two bumped into a friend of the missing girl's family or her mother in the small village, Detchon said.

Detchon said there is no telephone at the 17-year-old's house and it didn't occur to the teen to go to a nearby store to use a phone.

Authorities made reverse 911 calls alerting residents of the missing girl.

Courtney's parents reported her missing at 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Authorities said that she easily can become disoriented and confused and launched a full-scale search that included a night-vision helicopter.

Sheriff's deputies, Ohio Highway Patrol, local fire and rescue workers, and county park employees were involved in the search.

``If you can get on [a search] right away, you're going to have a much better success rate,'' Detchon said.

Authorities plan to interview Courtney and her family to find out where she was before she showed up at the house.
