Two motorcyclists die in separate crashes in Medina County

By Beacon Journal staff

Two 49-year-old men riding motorcycles were killed in separate accidents in Medina County on Friday afternoon.

Brunswick police began chasing John E. Melchior, 49, of Parma on state Route 303 at about 4:30 p.m. based on Parma Municipal Court warrants charging aggravated burglary and attempted rape.

The department ended the chase about a minute later at U.S. Route 42 because of Melchoir's high speed and traffic conditions, authorities said.

Melchior continued northbound on Route 42 where he crashed head-on into a 2004 Ford Escape, driven by Susan Garret, 43, of Valley City, at 4:37 p.m. The SUV, which was going southbound, was stopped in the left-turn lane at Grafton Road.

Melchior was knocked from the 2007 Harley-Davidson and landed in the road. His motorcycle then hit a 2006 Kia Optima driven by Dawn Wilker, 32, of Medina.

Melchior was taken to Medina General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

In the other accident, Melyvn L. Rager of Marshallville was driving north on Hartman Road, south of Reimer Road, in Wadsworth at 12:55 p.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Yamaha and went left of center in some curves.

He hit a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by Meredith D. Fix, 59, of Wadsworth. Rager was taken to Akron General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Fix and his two children, who were in the truck with him, were not injured.

Neither of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets.
