Summit elections board to seek more money from county

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

The Summit County Board of Elections plans to request an additional $615,000 from the county to cover expenses through the end of the year.

Bryan Williams, the board's deputy director, said the extra funds are needed to buy — among other items — the ballots for this fall's presidential election.

The county gave the board less than its original budget request for this year, and the board had anticipated needing to seek more funds.

The request isn't coming at a good time for the county, however, as its budget is already strained.

County officials are expected to dip into reserves to close a projected $8.4 million spending gap in its operating budget. They have blamed the gap on lower interest from investments, lackluster consumer spending, the foreclosure crisis and a stagnant housing market that has dampened county revenue.

The elections board this morning voted to have Williams and Marijean Donofrio, the board's director, attend Monday's County Council meeting to ask for the additional funds.
