Palin connects with 6 locals at Akron Canton airport

By Beacon Journal staff

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's campaign plane delivered her from Colorado to Akron Canton Airport on Monday afternoon for a private fundraiser at Brookside Country Club in Perry Township.

The plane — an Embraer 190 regional jet chartered from JetBlue — landed just before 3:45 p.m.

The Alaskan governor and her husband, Todd Palin, greeted six local residents selected by the campaign, who lined up on the tarmac at the foot of the rolling stairway.

One of the six, Melissa Warner, is the mother of a 19-year-old Marine killed in Iraq in 2006.

''She signed my son's Marine pin,'' Warner said afterward, showing the button photograph of her son, Pvt. Heath D. Warner.

Heath Warner was killed Nov. 22, 2006, by a roadside bomb in Iraq, along with two other Marines.

''She said 'God bless you,' '' Warner said. ''She had tears. And she said, 'Mrs. Warner, I'm not going to let you down.' ''

Heath Warner left for boot camp shortly after graduating from McKinley High School in 2005. He was sent to Iraq on Sept. 11 in 2006.

Palin's 19-year-old son, Private 1st Class Track Palin, left for Iraq with his Army unit on Sept. 11 of this year.

Warner said Palin commented on how they both were military moms who shared something in common.

''Our sons both deployed on 9/11, so we did talk about that as well,'' Warner said.

Palin was on the tarmac about 15 minutes and did not speak with the local media before leaving with her motorcade for the fundraiser at the private country club.

High winds on Sunday caused damage in 84 of the state's 88 counties, prompting Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland to declare a state of emergency on Monday.

Palin had planned to attend an event in Cincinnati on Monday night, but the campaign canceled the appearance.

''Due to the state of emergency, and to avoid a possible diversion of personnel and resources, Gov. Palin's visits to the Cincinnati and Dayton areas have been postponed to a later date,'' said Paul Lindsay, McCain-Palin spokesman.

However, the rally near Youngstown scheduled for this afternoon is still on.

Palin will join Sen. John McCain for a rally at 4 p.m. at Winner Aviation, 1453 Youngstown Kingsville Road N.E. in Vienna.

"I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight..... If you graduate from Harvard law School, you are unstable. If you attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded. If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing state of 3 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience. If your total resume is: beauty queen, local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive. If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's. If your husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable. OK, much clearer now." Quit frankly the thought of Ms. Palin sitting across the table from the likes of a Mahmoud Ahmadinejad chills me to the bone. Given McCains health issues and age Ms. Palin could in deed become the President Of The United States. . Scary Very Scary

Sad what our country has come to. It started when women went to work and God was taken out of our schools.

Ignorance Kills

It's sad that a country such as the US which still has so much potential to adapt to the changing times and even lead the way through them, is being dragged down by such vile, criminal and reactionary politics as embodied by the party that wrecked America, the Republican Party. Eight years of failed foreign and domestic policy under Bush and Cheney have resulted in a decline in US strength and vitality on all fronts, from school performance, to health care, to innovation, technological breakthroughs and new economic development. Our infrastructure nationwide is woefully inadequate for the 21st century and is in many cases failing or close to it. Even our much vaunted globe-spanning military forces are breaking down under the excessive strain of playing global cop in two foreign countries. Meanwhile, Russia, China, Brazil and India are all rising as economic powers, and are surpassing us in every one of the areas in which we once dominated. What's the Republican solution? To chant "Drill! Drill! Drill!" and "USA! USA! USA!" as if a faux show of patriotism and falling back on 19th century industry is the answer to all of our problems is both ingenuous and ignorant. John McCain's candidacy is the embodiment of all that is wrong with the present direction of the US.
