BARBERTON: The Ohio National Guard has officially accepted a $410,000 bid by the Barberton Community Foundation to buy the former National Guard armory and nine acres along Norton Avenue.
The foundation was the high bidder during a public auction Wednesday. The bid was contingent on the approval by Maj. Gen. Greg Wayt, who has signed off on the sale, a National Guard spokesman said today.
The foundation now has 60 days to pay for the property, he said.
The city and foundation are working together to determine the best future use for the land near the intersection of Norton and Barber Road. Officials have suggested an office complex or a branch college campus.
The Barberton National Guard Armory first opened in November 1956 and served as home for Company B of the 137th Tank Battalion. It closed in 2003.

I'm confident the Barberton deep thinkers will put the armory to good use. First off, they'll probably take in the redneck rasslin' matches from the Shamrock. The Fifth Avenue Flea Market can't be far behind.
To our collective brain trust at Barberton City Hall, have but two words for you that apparently no one there has ever heard before. Eminent Domain. Go ahead and look that phrase up and get back to us...
BTW, speaking of Barberton City Hall.... When is the money we pay for "Rain Water Removal" going to do something about the flooding in the same areas of town for the past 60 years? Obviously, you arent removing rain water, just money from your residents.
Congratualtion's! The Barberton Community Foundation 'stepped up to the plate' again for Barberton Citizens and for the growth opportunities available to the City of Barberton! For this BCF and our Municipal Officials and/or any other entity and/or individuals, I want to personally THANK ALL OF YOU who made this happen. I'm so glad that we were able to get the Armory back. I was praying someone in Barberton would help us. I'm sure that our Municipal Officials and BCFoundation Members will utilize the property in the best interest of our City's needs. Again, CONGRATULATION'S! Joyce Anderson
