LAKE TWP.: An 83-year-old handicapped woman was killed in a house fire on Wilhurst Avenue Northeast early Monday morning.
Genevieve Cutright, who used a wheelchair, died in the blaze in the split-level home owned by her grandson, Vincent Cutright.
Hartville Fire Chief Richard Kamerer said the Stark County Sheriff's Office
received a hang-up 911 call from the house at 1:45 a.m. Monday and when deputies went to investigate they found the house on fire.
''She lived with her grandson and his wife, who were out of town,'' Kamerer said. ''But there was a friend of the family who was there helping take care of her. The friend of the family was able to get out of the house, but was unable to get the victim out.''
Kamerer said it took firefighters 20 minutes to get the blaze under control. Genevieve Cutright was found inside.
Two firefighters sustained minor burns and were treated at the scene. Damage to the house was estimated at $200,000.
Kamerer said there were no smoke detectors in the house and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
The fire is being investigated by the Hartville Fire Department and the state fire marshal's office.
Kamerer said Cutright was the third home-fire fatality his department has handled in the last 12 years.
