Suspect shot by Summit County Drug Unit officer is in hospital

By Beacon Journal staff

An Akron man was shot by undercover officers Thursday night when he allegedly tried to run over one of them.

Jesse L. Gooden, who will be charged with felonious assault, is in the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening, Akron police said.

According to police, undercover officers from the Summit County Drug Unit saw Gooden, 29, of South Hawkins Avenue, involved in suspected drug activity in a parking lot in the 800 block of Wolf Ledges Parkway about 11 p.m.

When officers approached the vehicle and identified themselves, police said, Gooden put the car in reverse and backed into the unmarked police car.

When Gooden tried to flee and run over one of the officers, an officer fired at him, police said.

The Akron Police Department is investigating.

No other information about the incident is being released.

Was Jesse wearing one of those hoodie sweaters?
He's gotta be one of those bad eggs you hear so much about.

If you're going to be stupid enough to try and run over an officer, then you should expect to be shot...

Good Job ABJ, screwed another story up. The Summit COunty Drug Unit was involved in the shooting, not the Akron Police. Do some simple research before you publish an erroneous story. Check Akronnewanow.com for the correct story.

Ahh, I see they corrected their headline from Suspect shot by Akron Police, is in hospital to the new headline. Get it right the first time.

The University of Akron Police were involved to. Why don't they get any credit?

Always a person (John) who shoots his mouth off without knowing any of the facts. I'd like to know what people like him have been arrested for to dislike people who would risk their lives to save you or your family. Just an incredibly stupid person.

I guess noone here believes that APD or University Police can do no wrong. For the guy who asked if Jesse was wearing a hoodie..... Why don't you take yours off and open your eyes. The police aren't giving any other info because there are way too many unanswered questions. What the paper doesn't say is that Jesse was shot 3 times. One in the chest, one in the hand and one in the back of his leg. I don't know about anyone else, but I just don't think I would be able to shoot someone in the back of their leg while they are trying to hit me with a car in reverse. Jesse was actually shot by someone and trying to get out of the parking lot of the McDonald's he was at, to get to a hospital. A cop pulled up behind him as he was leaving and just assumed he was trying to run. Now they are saying a drug transaction took place, but then why isn't he being charged with it? Hmmmmm?

If Jesse was shot by somebody before the cops came then how did the casing match the officers gun? AND....the officers didn't "just happen to pull up" they had been watching everything that had been going on...why do you think this was all done by undercover cops? Read the article next time.

WHAT?!

Posted 09:02 PM, 10/11/2008

MYOB, I think you should take your own advice and read the article...It states that officers "saw" what they suspected as drug activity, not that they were watching or conducting surveillance. I also did not see anything in the article about any casings matching the gun of the officer. I agree with Linda, there are way too many unanswered questions and I would like to take out an ad in the ABJ classified "WANTED: A responsible newspaper reporter that can get facts from both sides of the story!" Think about it, who would put a car in reverse first if they were purposely trying to run someone over, why not just hit the gas? AND.. if I'm an officer and I see that someone is backing up in an attempt to drive away- what would I do? AHA, I would just jump in front of the car so I can have a reason to shoot!

Well Faye, I guess we'll just wait til this is all done and over with and see what REALLY happened then...

WHAT?!

Posted 03:03 PM, 10/12/2008

The only people that will ever know what REALLY happened are the people that were there...everything else is hearsay.
