Maryland Democrat claims U.S. House seat long held by GOP

By Brian Witte
Associated Press

STEVENSVILLE, MD.: Democrat Frank Kratovil is accepting victory one week after Election Day in a very tight U.S. House race in Maryland.

The seat was held for 18 years by Republicans.

Kratovil accepted victory after GOP candidate Andy Harris called him this morning to concede. Harris had knocked off incumbent GOP Rep. Wayne Gilchrest in the primary.

The Associated Press called the close race late last week for Kratovil, who waited for about 4,800 provisional ballots to be counted Monday.

At the end of Election Day, Kratovil was up by 915 votes. That lead grew to a little more than 2,000 votes after the first group of absentee ballots were counted Friday. Provisional ballots tallied Monday added more than 150 votes to Kratovil's total.
