Akron warns residents about flat-screen TV thefts

By Associated Press

What's expected to be a hot holiday gift again this year is already a hit with thieves in Akron.

Police said flat-screen TVs have been the target of eight home burglaries in the last two weeks. They said in the past two months about 100 of the big-screen TVs have been reported stolen.

Officer Jim Conley said people who own or are shopping for a flat-screen need to consider that what's on sale at Best Buy is something thieves will want to sell, too — on the black market.

Police said flat-screen owners should go outside at night when their set is on to see if it's visible through the windows. If so, they recommend that residents move the TV so it won't be a lure to burglars. They also suggest that homeowners keep curtains closed when they're away.

Also I got some good advice to try not to stick the box out in the open on trash day. Try to crush it up and put it in a bag. Theives will see that box and know you have nice things, like tv's and x-box 360's. Hope everyone has a safe & happy holiday!

Speaking of boxes ...

I read the warranty on my newly purchased big screen television ...

On a warrantied return, you have to return it in it original box.

Driving down my residential street, I can easily see a couple houses that own a big screen television ... it lights up the whole room.

Trisha, that is excellent advice on the disposing of holiday boxes and packages. Any law enforcement agency will tell folks, criminals know what days are trash days in each neighborhood, and right after the holidays they case neighborhoods for those very type of clues -- boxes and packages indicating big-price-tag items.

Sad but true is the world we live in.

C'mon and take my flat screen--I have my 45 waiting! Make my day.

I'll stick with the old box with the converter for a while. What the rats don't want, I'll safely keep.

After the Big Switch, and once the prices come down and the nuance wears off, perhaps I'll go flat screen.

Flat screens might be nice, but they are over-rated. Once it breaks, have fun getting it fixed! They don't last as long as other TV's. Besides, you really don't have to have one after the big switch. As long as you have cable or satellite, you have nothing to worry about no matter what TV you have.

The police are correct. My daughter's 46"-48" flat screen was stolen in October. The thieves went through a window where there was an air-conditioner. It's just a shame that some people won't go out and buy their own things. Be careful as the other reader suggested. You should break down your boxes.

More reason to save the box for the warranty.

Now I just need to go rent an ever bigger box, to store all my stinking boxes.

Oh, they flatten and fit behind the basement wall... cool. Problem solved.
