Zips win in final seconds of second OT

By Michael Beaven
Special to the Beacon Journal

Senior midfielder Matt Tutich scored with five seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the University of Akron men's soccer team past Ohio State 1-0 this afternoon in an NCAA Tournament second-round match played at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

Zips junior midfielder Ben Zemanski, a Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy graduate, started the play with a free kick from the left side, directing the ball forward toward the box. Tutich then headed the ball into the net from about 10 yards away, past OSU senior goalkeeper Drew Czekanski.

The goal advanced the fifth-seeded Zips into the third round, where UA will play Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday at a site to be determined. Northwestern defeated Notre Dame 2-1 on Tuesday.

UA (17-1-4) and OSU (9-9-3) were playing on St. V-M's turf because the Zips' Lee Jackson Field was deemed unplayable by NCAA officials as a result of heavy rain and snow that made it muddy and sloppy. The match originally was scheduled for Tuesday night.

Tutich's goal in the 110th minute set off a massive celebration. Several players ran toward midfield, then gathered on the sideline and joyfully threw snow into the air. The playful snowball fight included UA students and fans in the crowd.

The Zips held advantages in shots (20-9), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (7-4). UA sophomore forward Steve Zakuani had three shots on goal, Tutich had two and freshman forwards Darlington Nagbe and Teal Bunbury each contributed one.

UA senior goalkeeper Evan Bush made three saves. The Zips' defense, which consisted of Bush, sophomore Chris Korb, freshman Kofi Sarkodie and redshirt freshmen Aaron Henkle and Matt Dagilis (Firestone) in the starting lineup, recorded its 14th shutout of the season. Zips senior defender Ossie Michalsen contributed in a reserve role.

OSU started all six players who had been suspended for the Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament first-round match at Oakland (Mich.). Sophomore Matt Gold had two shots on goal and sophomore Sam Scales had one.

There is a rumor out there that they are moving the next match to Northwestern's home field. The match won't be played in Akron because the weather and the artificial turf in Evanston much better than Akron. The NCAA really must hate the University of Akron several years ago in football, for a couple of years in basketball, two years ago in soccer and now this. Northwestern is not even seeded.

With #4 seed Michigan State (who was ranked lower in the polls than Akron)out of the tourney, the NCAA needs to do what it can to have a Big 10 team go deep into the tourney.
