CLEVELAND: A state task force is recommending that Ohio's 28 cents per gallon fuel tax be increased by 13 cents to raise more money for the state's transportation needs.
The panel also is calling for a state constitutional amendment to allow gas tax revenue to pay for waterway and transit system improvements, in addition to the highway and bridge construction the money now goes toward.
And, the 62-member task force made up of government and business officials says the state should consider hiking vehicle registration and driver's license fees by $1 each to raise even more transportation revenue.
A spokesman for Gov. Ted Strickland says the governor appreciates the panel's work but doesn't think a tax increase is the best idea in the middle of a recession.

A 46% increase in the gas tax is no small amount. It would have be nice if they reported the estimated revenue this would bring in to the state. The tag and license thing is nothing. $5 every four years. What's next I wonder?

Any increase in gas taxes should be put towards the goal of permanently reducing dependence on foreign energy.One has only to look at the situation faced by European countries (energy supplies cut of by Russia,in the middle of winter) to see that any increase in taxes must be used for this purpose if the United States is going to survive.
It is odd that any increase in gas taxes,likely to be far smaller than this summer's run up in prices, will be protested and kept to a bare minimum,thus helping to set the stage for a future catastrophe during which we will yearn for the days of the past(today)when we could have prepared for energy independence by spending gas tax money in the US on DOMESTIC energy production and conservation projects.
Today's low prices may be our last chance to do something about this; for soon enough, gas prices will be going back up to 4 and 5 dollars per gallon(or higher)and ALL of this money will be going to countries like Venezuela,Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Strickland is an absolute idiot. The state needs the money, higher gas prices will encourage conservation, reduce the amount of money going to the middle east and spur the development of alternative sources of energy.
This country has gotten a free ride for far too long and we are not WAY past the point of needing to change our ways.

with all of the economic problems we are facing, leave it up to the gov to want an increase in taxes. As if things were not bad enough and people were not already struggling to make ends meet. the roads in ohio suck. they always have. throwing more $$ at the problem is not the right answer.

Hey flyby1996 i was going to suggest the same thing.Cut the panel in hal ..hell we dont need a panel at al making suggestions like that. I figure they came up with that since the gas prices dropped. I bet they dont decrease the gas tax if the gas goes back up. I guess they assume that people wouldnt noticed. How did they get on that panel anyway?

Gas at a lower price has helped put some monies back in the pocket of Americans. It has been great but I knew it wouldn't last. Go ahead raise the price of gas again it will just make things worse then they already are. You just can't win. We are the poorest state in the union and have the highest taxes. This is just dumb.

And here we go again!We can't take another year like this past.The high cost of gas seriously damaged our economy.I just read a profound book called The Manhattan Project of 2009 by Jeff Wilson. Among the things I learned that fascinated me is that it would cost the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to charge and drive an electric car. If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV's instead had plug-in electric drive trains, the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota. Why don't we use some of the billions in bail out money to bail us out of our dependence on foreign oil? www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com I say drill our own oil and get started on getting renewable sources of energy set up. Oil is finite, it will run out one day in the not too distant future. We should never allow other countries to have that much power over our economy.

If you want to make a few bucks--go after the people who are driving around on expired temp tags--saw a car around Chapel Hill area the other day--tags were expired back in OCT. Say $5.00 a day your're late--half going to road repair--other half to the schools-yea maybe in a few years people won't let the tags go beyoud 2-3 days but there is always enough jerks to keep on driving after the fact.

By the way...has anyone noticed any change in the price of groceries? I mean they went up because of transportation increases. Now that they have gone down, it has been awhile, they should be lower?

$.13/gal. would run me another $2.60/month. It may be noisy, ugly, lacking simple options, full of blind spots and not accelerate for squat, but I love my little Echo on gas. 36-42 MPG.

What happen to all the tax money collected when the price of gas was at 3-4 per gallon?
How about this, put it on the public ballot and let us vote on it, better yet let’s vote on reducing their salaries to save money.
With the state of the economy and everyone out of work do you really think tax hikes are the answer?
Why don’t the local and state governments go to congress for a bail out like the banking industry?
You need the public working and purchasing products to turn this mess around.
Tax hikes will add fuel to the fire.
