CINCINNATI: An increasing number of Ohio parents are using religious exemptions to delay or refuse for immunizations for children amid fears that vaccines contribute to autism.
Ohio Department of Health data shows the number of religious or philosophical exemptions nearly quadrupled in Ohio between 1998 and 2008, though that figure still represents fewer than 1 in 100 children.
All states require children to be immunized for school. Most allow religious exemptions, and Ohio and 19 others also permit exemptions for personal reasons.
Doctors say they're concerned that more exemptions could lead to outbreaks of preventable illnesses among children who haven't had the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.
For years, scientists have debunked earlier reports of a link between children's vaccines and autism.

I have to say more & more Im starting to agree. I will have my children get the same vaccines i got when i was younger. No more, No less. I believe i got 2 shots right before i went to kindergarden in 1990. I think I got 2 more sometime before I was 5 years old.
Kids today get too so many vaccines at once, and often. How can their little bodies handle so much?
These people are quacks
Of course, you can believe what the Pharmaceutical Giants tell you. And their lawyers & lobbyists. And shareholders. Absolute gospel.
yeah right is right on.
I will continue to vaccinate according to an adjusted schedule. My children will NEVER receive 10 or more vaccinations on the same day as the CDC recommends for 6, 12, 15 & 18 months! I followed their chart to a "T" for my oldest son and even though he was exclusively breastfed he still suffers from asthma, allergies and an extremely weak immune system. What people are failing to realize is that there are MANY other reasons that parents are wishing to alter the schedule for their children ... at some point you HAVE to start listening to the mothers!! We are not all fanatical and over reactive! We are the closest people to our children, people!!
What's wrong with loading up on mercury?
Sincerely,
Jeremy Piven
I love hearing and reading these wild leaps of insane logic. Unintentional hilarity. Posters say their kids' allergies, "weak immune system" and whatever is all because of those dastardly vaccinations. Come on.
Get your freakin' cat out of the house. The kid was born with it. If you want to blame something or somebody, then blame your own DNA. You gave it to him. Or blame your husband's DNA, if it makes you feel any better. Wives love to blame husbands for everything, no matter how wacky it is.
"It's raining outside? It's gotta be my schmuck husband's fault."
People, do what you want and live with the consequences. If you don't want to follow the advice of the educated people in the field, then don't do so, but don't blame them for the results.
In my charts as a medical provider, I never do a procedure or prescribe a medication that a patient refuses. I just write on the records....patient refuses _______AMA(against medical advice). That way you can't sue me when you suffer the consequences of your supposed theory!
bbd,
Does it concern you that many in the public view medical providers (and public health officials) with such little credibility that they refuse vaccinations for the most important people in their lives (serious question, not being abrasive)?
The Original Jason, people are going to believe whatever they are going to believe. And who precisely is this "many in the public?" It's not "many," it's a small minority, many of whom happen to be in the radical lunatic fringe. You couldn't change their minds if God himself walked downstairs from his cloud holding a vaccine syringe and said, "Ya know, you folks are just plain nuts."
Oh yes. Let us risk POLIO, which KILLS, rather than autism which many people go on to successfully live with. Choose death for your child over a little bit of inconvenience for YOURSELF. That sure makes sense!
I agree, iVoRn, Measles in on the rise, and a baby was died of (preventable) menningitis in Minnesota.
The thing is, these parents are going to ride off the coattails of parents who DO vaccinate their child. Freeriders, of sorts.
was died? what?
I forget the chemical name; but it's the preservative in the innoculations that does the harm, supposedly. Talk to Jenny McCarthy, she knows ALL about it. Parents aren't vaccinating their children, and there was recently a severe measles outbreak.
kathleenD it is called Thimersol, I know you can also reqest vaccine without it in there they are more expensive but you can and they are single dose.
Look at the Gardasil vaccine. The on pushed on girls who are prone to get the HPV infection IF they are sexually promiscuous. So, tell the girls to 'keep it to one guy at marriage, problem reduced. Or poison them with this vaccine. The took women in their 20s (who are screened for adverse health) who were tested there were no side effects, but now that 16 million girls younger than that that aren't screened are being vaccinated they're seeing the more troubling aspects of the vaccine come out. The vaccine has not been tested for more than 2 years. The HPV-induced forms of cervical cancer (those protected against by Gardasil) occur due to chroniv HPV infection, which occurs in less than 7% of all women. Killing 1% to save 5% (rough numbers) is not a good benefit to risk ratio. In the FDA literature, Gardasil does not prevent HPV infection. It was tested for a much shorter time than it takes for the cancer to occur (which means it might not be as efficient at prevention as they say). And it was not tested in young girls. I want to see this vaccine pulled until further safety testing is done.
Alan T,
According to the article, "many" is 1/100. That is a low ratio, but represents a substantial number of kids in Ohio that aren't being vaccinated.
Where does your assured tone originate? Are you a doctor or are you repeating what the majority of people are telling you? You might be right, but you might not. My take? I have no idea what the answer is, but I'm willing to admit that. I'm not advocating closing the book on this issue on the chance, no matter how small, that more kids are poisoned. Check out some of Julie Gerberding's (outgoing CDC Director) comments on the issue.
The link between vaccines and autism has already been debunked, and the scientist that was advocating the links between the two (Andrew Wakefield) has recently admitted falsifying his data of the 12 children he allegedly "studied".

ALL OF YOU MOTHERS AND FATHERS OUT THERE. GET THE VACCINES THAT WILL PROTECT YOUR CHILD. MMR,CHICKENPOX,TETNUS, HEP A,HEP B, ALSO I MADE SURE MY TEENAGERS ALL GOT THE MENNINGITIS VACCINE. YOU DONT HAVE TO GET THE PNEUMONIA OR ANY OF THE OTHER ONES THAT ARE OPTIONAL. DONT DEPRIVE YOUR CHILD OF ATLEAST A HEALTHY START IN LIFE. I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY CHILDREN VACCINATED THAN HAVE TO SEE THEM IN THE HOSPITALOR WORSE. I DONT AGREE WITH ALL THE VACCINES BUT I SURVIVED ALL MY SHOTS. THESE DISEASES OUT THERE ARE NOTHING TO MESS WITH.
We got all the vaccines, except Chicken Pox. The doctor said they were working on a better version and in a few years it would be more effective. The Doctor said there was no point in getting the chicken pox shot as it is right now, because it doesnt work! So we went with what the doctor said.
children need to get all the shots, unless the doctor says differently, so that we do not have measle outbreaks etc. But they can stagger them. Mercury is not in all shots, and there is more mercury in tuna fish.
Here's my take: No MMR? No school for you. Done deal. Be responsible, people.
Why would people care if other peoples kids got all thier shots.
As long as thier kids have them. Shouldn't they be immune? If not why get them the shots.
I am ok with the normal vaccines that have been given to kids for years. It's all the new drugs that are coming out that I refuse to give my kids. My daughtors will never get the HPV vaccine, and will fight if they ever try to make it required.
