Furloughs, pay cuts at John Carroll University

By Associated Press

CLEVELAND: With its endowment dwindling, John Carroll University in Cleveland has asked administrators and staff to take unpaid leave and faculty members to accept pay cuts.

University president Rev. Robert Niehoff says the Wall Street crisis has caused the school's endowment to lose 26 percent of its value, going from $177 million to about $130 million as of late December.

The fund's earnings are used to provide student financial aid, and Niehoff says that won't be reduced.

So, John Carroll's vice presidents will take a 5 percent pay cut. Other non-faculty employees have been told to pick 10 work days to stay home without pay in the next fiscal year, beginning June 1. Faculty have been asked to waive a provision in their contract so their salaries can be lowered.
