NORTH CANTON: The effort to fill the cavernous former Hoover buildings in North Canton is beginning to pay dividends.
North Canton Mayor David Held held a news conference this morning in the Hoover Complex Auditorium to announce that Absolute Health Services and Altercare of Ohio Inc., owned and operated by the Schroer Group Inc., will lease 57,000 square feet of office space in the Hoover Complex's B Building. The move will bring 250 professional jobs to North Canton.
Schroer officials say the relocation will consolidate management operations for nursing homes and other services currently housed at Park Centre on Whipple Avenue in Jackson Township and an office adjacent to a nursing home in Navarre.
The move is expected to be completed by September.
''This is the tenant that pushes us over the top in our effort to rebound from the loss of the Hoover Company,'' Held said. ''This is so big — the 250 jobs it brings to North Canton almost doubles what we already had brought in.''
Held said there is no way to underscore how important this is for the city.
''The heart of our city, this Hoover facility, stopped beating when the Hoover manufacturing plant closed Sept. 27, 2007,'' the mayor said. ''This is a big step in our vision to preserve the facility and revitalize the city's economy.''
Held said when Hoover employed 2,400 people in 2000 — the city collected about a quarter ($1 million a year) of its income tax revenues from the company.
Held said there are now nearly 300 people working at the Hoover site purchased by Industrial Reality Group in 2007.
Dennis Conley, CEO of Schroer Group, said his company extensively researched several other facilities throughout Stark and Summit counties, with a particular focus on Fairlawn, for about 18 months before choosing the Hoover property.
The ''smart office'' complex will house accounting, human resources, information technology and other support services. Schroer Group owns and operates 17 nursing homes in Ohio and one in Michigan as well as other companies.
Conley said the company plans two more nursing homes in Stark County in the next five years.
The company also provides rehabilitation, therapy, home health and long-term care services, and distributes food to restaurants, schools and institutions.
''We have doubled in size over the past eight years and we were looking for a facility that could give us up to 60,000 square feet,'' Conley said. ''The Hoover Co. building was one of the only sites in Stark County that had all that square footage on one floor. It gives us space to grow.''
An added bonus, Conley said, is the fact that North Canton's income tax of 1.5 percent is lower than that found in Summit County and the property has a rich history.
''The Hoover Company is an Ohio landmark that must be saved,'' Conley said.
The move, Conley said, will not result in the loss of any jobs from either office.
Stuart Lichter, of IRG, said the agreement will push the total amount of leased space to 500,000 square feet, more than a third of the available 1.4 million square feet in the complex.
''And, what's important to the city — we're now close to the number of employees the Hoover Co. had the last year,'' Lichter said.

These aren't new jobs. They're simply transplants from Jackson Twp. and Navarre. This is not a benefit to the region. It's a loss for Jackson Twp. and Navarre and a gain for North Canton's income tax base. This is called breaking even for the region. Big deal.
this is a good thing for north canton. it will help the housing market in the area. this is the biggest problem counrty wide. It is about time some higher paying jobs come in to the area.

Anyone can create minimum wage jobs, which is what these 250 jobs are. Who is gonna create jobs that pay what Hoover use to pay? That is the question.
This shows eactly why IRG and the Gooyear project will fail.
Reality demands Union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America’s grandchildren’s children fund the 2400 workers, consumers, taxpayers, Hoover corporation left jobless, homeless, indigent, and without a means to love, nurse, nurture, discipline, protect, and provide for EVERY child (job) they conceive paying with welfare checks, food stamps, housing vouchers, and Medicaid.
