Absentee voting starts Wednesday in Akron's mayoral recall election

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Absentee voting in the recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic begins Wednesday.

People can vote via absentee ballot at the Summit County Board of Elections, 470 Grant St., or request a ballot by mail.

The election will be June 23.

Akron residents have until next Tuesday to register for the election.

The ballot will have a single question, ''Shall Don Plusquellic be removed from the office of mayor by recall?'' Voters will mark either ''for'' or ''against'' the recall.

The Summit County elections board will print absentee ballots using a ballot-on-demand machine. The board voted today to order regular ballots for the election, which are expected to cost about $35,000.

The board is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those with questions may call the board at 330-643-5200.

It is good to see the taxpayer's investment in the "Ballot On Demand" system pays off again.

This system kept the BOE from having (literally) over 600 different versions of ballots on hand for the absentee portion of the 2008 primary elections. Now it allows absentee voting to begin 2 weeks earlier than it would otherwise.

Good job Summit County BOE!

So why is the article void of how to 'request a ballot by mail" when it's clear how/where to vote in person? A BOE address and sample verbiage would have helped those desiring to make the request by mail.

Granted, the address is noted but...

p.s. I was just told, you may also call the number above and request a ballot to be mailed to you. AND, you may go to the BOE web site and download the 'form' requesting an absentee ballot.

So, as usual, the article was void of various facts.

Hopefully Mendenhall will go to all the homeless shelters and get those people out to vote. Promise them anything you need to regardless of it being truthful or a lie but make sure they are voting for change. Tell them free money is coming and all new programs that will make their life easier. And go to the poorest areas of town where the uneducated live and explain a vote for recall is a vote for prosperity for everyone. And use the word HOPE also. Now is the time to do whatever it takes to get rid of Akrons Mayor

@Overtaxed Voter @ Real Voice of Treason: Nothing like UFO sightings and re-posts to spur the debate.

I wonder, rather loudly, why, again, the recall effort has missed an opportunity to get people moving by promoting the absentee ballots.

Clueless and leaderless isn't an effective way to run any campaign.

@ nottheusual1 - it's been a while - I also wonder (not quite as loud) why we still use the archaic method of voting with today's technology. Why does one need to walk, or get in their car, or ride the bus to a central polling location - when they could use their phone, or their computer, or Blackberry. Given enough controls some or all of these methods should work.

For that matter, a mass mailing of absentee ballots to all registered voters. Vote, sign the ballot and return in a self addressed envelope (maybe even with some form of notarization).

@NotTheUsual...

What are you talking about. I've only made 1 posting in this thread (so much for the 're-post' claim),and is was squarely "on topic" (so much for your UFO report rant).

@PacMan...

Mass mailings of absentee ballots to all registered voters is full of potential issues including:

Tremendous printing and mailing costs to the taxpayers (BOE) and return postage costs to the voters.

Huge invitation for fraud (which is also the problem with voting by cell phone, computer, or other such technologies).

Encouragement to people who might not be as informed as they should be to cast a vote. This could be good or bad for your particular candidate or issue.

Mendenhall will need those homeless votes to get anything. Other than maybe some disgruntled former city employees & a few assorted clueless Mendenhacks.

@ Overtaxed Voter - when we did start getting concerned about voters being 'informed'? :)

You missed the part about 'controls'...I still think what we do today is far more costly than mail or the internet or something techie.

@PacMan: I agree - stone knives and bear skins in the age of the Internet.

It's interesting to see how the youngsters voting the first time react to the process.

Will Miss Ann Thrope be answering our questions if we call 330-643-5200? You know, since she's an employee of the BOE and all? She can tell us all the reasons we should vote "FOR" just like she does on ohio.com.

The city attorneys claimed it would cost $175,000.00 for this election how can they have been so far off the mark. Was that a scare tactic to stop people from signing the petitions? Akron, Ohio made national news today. One of three city's that has no iinfrastructure to support news jobs.

@IllegalPlumber, I think they said the recall would cost $175k total, not just the single election. There is added costs for validating signatures twice, plus up to two elections total.

The following comes from the CitizensForAkron.com (the anti-recall group) website and is the first of their "10 Reasons To Keep Our Mayor".

1. A special recall election, including a new primary and a new general election, could cost taxpayers up to $500,000.

OK, now which group is 'fear-mongering'???
