Canton veterans complain over stadium display with flag

By Associated Press

CANTON: Following complaints from veterans, a banner with the U.S. flag beneath a Canadian one has been taken down at the stadium that hosts the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.

Banners for an upcoming international football competition at Fawcett Stadium in Canton showed the flags of the eight participating nations in the order in which they're seeded. The first banner in the series had No. 1 seed Canada above the U.S., the No. 2 seed.

Veterans and other critics objected, saying it was insulting and a breach of protocol to display a Canadian flag on top of the American flag.

The banners were removed Monday. Host committee chairman Robert Belden apologized for the display, calling it "unfortunate."

I seriously doubt anyone ment to offend vetrans as the a person with several in her family, I can say the Vets I am related to want respect but would not see a sports competetion thats bringing money to the region as disrepectful...its a little whiney particularly for Vets--I think one bad apple spoiled the bunch Most Vets have more important concerns than flag order at an international game...and Canada is our friend...so double so what

The display of the American flag has explicit regulations on how it should be displayed. If the American flag was second, then perhaps they should have displayed them side by side. You can't fault vetrans for standing up for something they faught for; and the flag is one of them.

I agree with New Akronite ... I am not a vet, my dad is ... I tend to be offended when the flag isn't displayed properly.

Petty? If anyone thinks this is petty then please, by ALL MEANS, GTFO NOW!!! Number one problem in this country, there is ZERO patriotism!! I seem to remember about eight years ago there wasn't a soul around who wasn't waving Old Glory in some way. How soon we forget huh?!?! You people that think this is petty or stupid make me sick. It REALLY p*sses me off that one day I had to fight for your rights. What do you people do in return? Spit in the faces of the ones who serve you. But I guess it doesn't matter though. We will soon be just like China or Russia with our newly elected Czar.

Oh come on you left wing nut jobs. You think it's ok to take the pledge out of schools because a couple of people on a school board say so but you are willing to offend veterans that make it possible for you to have your say. Get your own life and get some brains in your head if you have any.

Hey Dick, what is it you smoke?

If you have a problem with a Veteran correcting the display of Old Glory I suggest, next time, taking your complaint to your nearest VFW. I'm sure you'll get the answer you're looking for.

There is a place where the Canadian flag is permitted to fly higher than the Stars & Stripes. That place, as you should have learned in elementary school, is Canada. In the United States, no flag shall EVER fly higher than our own. No exceptions. It's called flag etiquette. Look it up at a library. While you seem to have destroyed all of yours, they haven't burned any of their books:)

Now, if the PFHOF wants to display flags in order of a country's seeding, thats fine. Provided, fo course, there is a lone American flag prosiding over them all. You're in the United States, Jack. I promise you won't find an American flag flying over a Russian flag in Moscow.

That fact that I joined the military to defend nimrods like you makes me sick.

Not surprised that the lefties on here don't know flag etiquette. It's ironic that most of them benefit from the cradle to the grave from US tax-funded programs, but they can't be bothered to respect the flag.

If all these flags were on the same banner in the same fashion the flags are displayed on TV during the Olympics then I don't see a problem. BUT, if these flags in question were individual and the Canadian flag was, in fact, flying higher than Old Glory then Dick needs to know his role, shut his mouth and smoke what it is he claims to smoke.

Tired of it,

You had me right up until your final statement, then it becomes clear that you're just another disgruntled person that is unhappy with Obama. You lose all creditibility with sensible people when you throw statements like that around.

Like China or Russia, an elected Czar, what a joke. Please go back to the Rush Limbaugh radio show so you can get some more skewed information.

If you are going to fly the flag, then you need to follow the rules for flying it. No flag shall be flown higher than the American flag when in the USA.

Of course Clinton was happy to burn it while hiding and protesting the war in the country supplying arms to the VC who was killing our soldiers.

Steve is right, a publication in Russia states that they are amazed as to how fast this country is headed to Marxism.

READ THE ARTICLE. They are not "flying a flag".
It is a banner that shows the particular seeding in a football competition. The pic of the flag represents which country the teams are from.
Canada is the #1 seed.
USA is the second seed.
READ people. READ.

Hey Steve, I am not disgruntled. I hope that the president gets our coountry on the right path. However, I do not believe in socialism. As far as Rush goes, I am FAR from a fan. I am NOT an extremist. I am right in the middle. I just happen to believe in capitalism is all.

When was the last time the United States had a war to protect our freedom? To all veterans I thank you for keeping this country an ecomonic superpower, but my freedom I owe to individuals who question authority on a daily basis.

All you FauxHawks:

Many veterans (me included) think you do us all a disservice when you make yourself out to be "better" than anyone else because of a choice you made at 18yo.

It should shape you, not define you.

Most of us veterans that are left made a conscious choice and volunteered to serve. We were raised with a sense of duty, so that was secondary to the killer education and the potential adventure.

Which is why I volunteered.

Speak for yourselves - if you are offended, don't hide behind the rest of us. You volunteered, nobody made you go do anything.

All we have in common as veterans is that we served. You'd find that fewer share your political/social views than you think.

Where the flag is on some banner promoting a sporting event causing all the patriotic fervor is ludicrous.

If we aren't first in the Olympics, our flag shows up lower on the scoreboard.

Ditto in World Cup Soccer and The Davis Cup.

Should we quit participating?

Right........

The flying of the Canadian flag above the American flag is just one of many violations of "flag flying rules". We lower the flag to half staff when someone we know dies. The rule states when a head of state dies or president or governer says to fly flag at half staff. The cities and groups make up the laws on flag flying, with disreguard for National rules for flag flying.

Those of you that fly the flag in violation of the flag rules cheapen the flag of this great country. I suggest you go to the county you think is better and fly their flag improperly and get your body beat up.

Honestly, this wasn't much in the way of news to begin with and the ramblings here are just that irrelevant ramblings on a non-news item.

It appears some on here want to boast their patriotism, slam Obama, the left wing, the right wing and any other wing they can think of, prop up Vets, tear down Vets and all without getting the general gist of the story. Grow up folks.

@nottheusual1 - I was thinking the same thing about the Olympics and other sporting events.

On the PGA leaderboards they put the flag of the country the player is from next to their names. Next time I am checking them online I guess I better sort them by country instead of who's leading just in case someone like Vijay Singh or Ernie Els is in first place. I would hate to offend anyone peeking over my shoulder.

There are rules in properly displaying the flag. The guy who designed the display didn't know the proper protocol. Someone who knew the proper protocol, a veteran, advised him of the problem and now it will get corrected. It's as simple as that. There's no need to point fingers and be hateful or to make more of it than it is.
