Two held in Wayne County slaying

By Beacon Journal staff

APPLE CREEK: Two suspects have been charged in the fatal shooting of Amish woman Barbara D. Weaver, 30, in her Apple Creek residence, Wayne County Sheriff Thomas G. Maurer said Wednesday.

Arrested were Barbara A. Raber, 39, of Millersburg, and the deceased woman's husband, Eli D. Weaver, 29, of the residence.

Raber was charged with aggravated murder while Eli Weaver was charged with complicity to commit aggravated murder.

Barbara Weaver's body was found June 2 in her bed with a gunshot wound to the head.

Her husband told deputies he was away fishing, officers said. The couple's five children were home during the shooting, but none was injured, Maurer said.

I had a feeling the husband was involved somehow. Away fishing huh....kind of reminds me of Scott Peterson. At least the children were unharmed but now they will be without parents!! My heart goes out to them!!

No word for the moment from any source I can find whether or not Raber (39!) is Amish.

I feel sorry for the kids - who will raise them?

The Amish community will help in raising the children. It is so sad that a community that appears to immuned from the violence of their outside world isn't immuned at all. God Bless the family, especially the children, during this time.

Suz, my guess is that the Amish community will step up. They probably have ton & tons of relatives. Speculative, sure, but a good bet they'll be in good hands.

Hey BillyBob! you might want to check yor information because the Amish aren't any more inbred than you and I! we all have come from Adam and Eve!!!!! You shouldn't judge their whole community because of one guy!!!!

It’s strange that Weavers five Amish children didn’t hear suspect shoot their mother and a family member found her dead?

The report doesn't tell you but the children found her. It is wierd thought that the children weren't awoken when she was shot.

Pretty sure he's Amish judging from the beard he was wearing-they had his picture on Channel 5 news at noon today. Maybe Mennonite instead but looks to be one or the other. Maybe kids didn't hear it-their bedrooms upstairs, parents down? Muffled gunshots with a pillow? cops aren't going to release all the details you know.

Hey olfuzzster!! What's up? He was definitely amish. Gunshots were obviously muffled somehow.

The Amish have problems in their community just like the rest of us ... But as a whole they are wonderful people. I am sure that the children will be taken in by family and will be well cared for and loved! I have friends who are Amish ... And you would could never find better people!

Hey Class of 73 I am in same boat I have friends and I also do run a work crew. They are a great group of people and don't deserve to be judged a bad because of this one person.

My friends live on Emerson Rd ... With an Apple Creek mailing address. Have been friends with them for about 20 years. Last I heard both were in pretty bad shape physically. I haven't visited with them in about a year ... But keep in touch by writing back and forth. I really need to take a trip to Kidron to see them. The coolest part of our friendship ... After knowing them for around 15 years ... We found out that we were distantly related. Seems we both descended from the same Hostetler Family from Pennsylvania.
