MIAMI: Former NFL and Miami Hurricanes star quarterback Bernie Kosar has filed for bankruptcy protection in Miami.
Kosar's Chapter 11 filing Friday lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.
Kosar owes almost $1.5 million to the Cleveland Browns, the team he quarterbacked from 1985 to 1993. Kosar also owes his ex-wife Babette $3 million and $725,000 to the owner of the Cleveland Gladiators team in the Arena Football League. He owes a bank more than $9 million for bad real estate deals.
The 45-year-old Kosar got divorced in 2007 and last year saw his steakhouse go out of business.
In addition to the Browns, Kosar played for Dallas and Miami before retiring from the NFL in 1996.

Diminishing skills.
Wow. ... and they said he was smart.
Ber-nie, Ber-nie, Oh, baby, so much you owe
He better not run anyone down. Not enough money to buy his way out of prison.
at least Golic's restaurant is still running!
I can understand all the other debt incurred, but why on earth does he owe the Browns 1.5 mil? I thought he was a consultant for them or something along those lines? Seems to me like they should owe him some money rather than the other way around. Weird.
Sorry to hear this...He always seemed to be a great person but it sounds like he bit off more than he could chew.
he should setup a booth outside the stadium. Catch a pass from Bernie - 5 bucks
He probably owes the Browns for all the alcohol he drank while broadcasting for them( sort of like the bartab the Blues Brothers rang up at Bob's Country Bunker). Babette should be paying him back, though. He had to rebuild a bridge in Aurora that she smashed back in the mid 90's. The drinking thing again.
Didn't everyone seriously wonder why Bernie was involved with trying to "BUY" the new Browns back in '99?
And, be honest...did anyone (Bueller, anyone?) think an indoor football team was a good investment? Why, oh, why can't former athletes bank some money and live comfortably, instead of wasting it away? Do you know how sickening it is to see a multi-millionaire file for bankruptcy protection?
It's all about LIVING WITHIN YOUR MEANS, folks.
...post bankruptcy will find Bernie with more money than anyone posting here today. What a hoax - bankruptcy.
zxz
Realitycheck...who lives within their means anymore?? The governments don't have to do it, why should anyone else??
It seems that his money management skills are on par with his quarterbacking.
I must say, Rico started this off with the best possible comment. I doff my chapeau!
I wonder how much he'd take for his Dallas SB champonship ring?
bernie always was a loser!
Bernie RULES, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let him announce again and make sure he gets some alcohol.
Those were the best games every.
It has to be bad for him to file...he probably drank away alot of it, even before the divorce he was going downhill. Sad stuff.
guess we'll be seeing bernie at the autograph shows and sign lots of memerobilia on ebay.
Seems like the guy needs a lot of help-his life sure has tanked in the last several years.
@ whackamole-watching Bernie announce games was like watching a train wreck in slow motion-I felt embarassed for all of NE Ohio. He is pathetic-I hope he gets some help.
Raise your hand if you've ever:
(1) Owned a chain of restaurants
(2) Held ownership in two sports team (Panthers and Gladiators)
(3) Started the NFL QB Club for licensing purposes
(4) Founded a charitable trust
(5) Had a wing at a major university named in your honor
No hands? Hmmm....
This makes me sad. I hate to see anyone fall on hard times.
This is a sad story that, under certain circumstances, could happen to anyone.
The last thing we should do is make fun of a person
that brought so much joy to our lives.
There, but for the grace of God, go I.
Hang in there brother Bernie!
This is a sad story and it could happen to any of us,
in a given set of circumstances.
The last thing we should do is laugh at him.
Good luck Bernie!
WSP must be bill belechick...
this is the future, folks; lots more are going to fall and it has nothing to do with brains...my father, a successful optometrist, is broke and lost his home...lots of great minds have gone broke several times...check the story behind cadillac
many of you snide thinkers will be broke, and that will be "what goes around, comes around"
Yankee- Why does a drunk Bernie reflect bad on ohio? You know how many sport announcers drink on the job? Tons and its makes it great.

Bernie, we were always told you were a smart business man, like the people the run the bailout banks, and GM.
By the way Bernie, what's Baboon's phone number?
Please don't hire him as a color commentator for the NFL. He's unwatchable. The good life come and goes just like that,SNAP
Obama will help him... Bernie needs a bailout!!
Wounded duck.Didn't live up to the hype. There are worse people in the world. It's a second chance world any way.
He is like most people who want more than they need.
Now the taxpayers pay back the banks..
What a country!!!!
press 2 if you speak Spanish !!! and we will give you free benefits.
Anyone JERKS posting negatively on here about his QB skills obviously never watched the Browns at that time. Those were the winningest Browns in 30 years. Or you are just a POS from pittsburgh.
Hey Godfather, where's Fredo?
In the hard economic times it is difficult to run any business. I have noticed that there have been alot of comments on bernie that were condescending. We are all human, we all have made some bad choices, deals. Life goes on.
"Those were the winningest Browns in 30 years." and still won nothing. Bernie scrambles like Joe C@cker dances. Or are you just a POS from Wadstucky???
Bernie Rules!!!! Anyone who jumps on one of their own is a sorry excuse for a person. Bernie actually wanted to play for the Browns and besides for Otto Graham was the best the Browns ever had. Sure he didn't win it all, what clevealnd team has? Not his fault that Byner fumbled and the Defense couldn't stop horse teeth...
In a finacial situation like this Bernie should borrow and spend 3X his debt. I believe that's the forumla our government is using.
Debt isn't bad, Akron has plenty.
"Those were the winningest Browns in 30 years"
THAT'S THE SADDEST AND FUNNIEST THING I'VE EVER READ ON THIS SITE.
They still lost when it really counted.
"Those were the winningest Browns in 30 years"
That is the funniest and saddest thing I've every read on this site.
How dumb is he????
...and Bernie probably voted for Obama...SUCKERRRRR!!!
There goes the only winning football team in town.
Is that him with the cardboard sign at Market and Route 8? Sign said homeless quarterback will work for food.
lol@realist!!!! I remember going to see Paul McCartney at the stadium. He put off his beginning of his show cuz"whiner"Kosar had to have his wife,or g/f at the time meet him.Ive been mad at him since.Good thing Ive always been a Marino man:-)
Everybody always believes...that would never happen to me. Riches corrupt!
And how many have a Super Bowl ring?? Anybody, Anybody-didn't think so. They might have lost some of those games when he was QB but they were sure interesting to watch compaired to Romero-he looked like a big fat Teddy Ruxspin on dying batteries-BORING. The guy has a drinking problem, got in over his head and screwed up-how many of you guys have unpaid bills? Filled bankruptcy. If he gets it together and makes it right then what's the problem. He has done more for Cleveland football than anyone else has recently.
@2BQ, highly doubtful. He's put himself forward as a proud Republican for years. Bernie could have really used some good financial advice long ago, but was probably set upon by so many predatory offers that he decided to wing it. Mistake.
Tampafrank...you are exactly right !!
WSP...MUST be a POS from pittsburgh. Bernie didn't have to scramble dumb*ss, they had an O line then. Obviously, you know nothing about the sport.
Bernie has a ring
Bernie does have a superbowl ring
WSP...you POS read the post from Tampafrank. It's true. But you probably know nothing about the sport.
WSP is a POS. Read the post from

Bernie has a ring. Many players play and don't have rings.
Bernie has a ring.
Bernie has a ring.
Hondacbx;lkh...Bernie beat sh*ttsburgh.
hondacbxlkjh...Bernie beat pittsburgh
Bernie has a ring - FROM DALLAS, and not as a starter. He never even a Conference Championship for Cleveland.
As far as Pittsburgh (since you brought it up) 6 wins are more than never even making it to the game. Now relax, and keep hoping someday, maybe next year. Joe Greene has six rings by the way.
Ben Roethlisberger has two rings and a positive net worth.
molson -
Does Bernie have a ring? just checking in case you forgot to post it again.
Although maybe he doesn't he may have sold it to help with his financial situation.
"And how many have a Super Bowl ring?? Anybody, Anybody-didn't think so."
Well no i do not have a superbowl ring, however i have also never had as much money as Bernie, and i have never had to file for Bankruptcy either.
Good!
Another Republican thief!
Suspicious of him since he campaigned for Voinovich then Taft.
Took the moneey and ran, now leaves the taxpayers on the hook.
Typical Republican!
Kosar's Chapter 11 filing Friday lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.
Quite a range there...
Who compiled those precise numbers?
What exactly is a "bad real estate deal"
Stupid article.
He did beat sh*ttsburgh quite a few times. Those were the days. I don't care what he did with his loot. And he does have a ring. I don't have a ring, but never played either.
Dear Jan,
Are you using the the computer at the library?
Typical Democrat?
Ben can't ride his motorcycle though!
Bernie Kosar - very insightful color commentator.
Should be in the HOF - much better stats than many QB's in there (Moon for example)
Great role model.
Led a charitable trust for kids.
Any so-called Browns fan that kicks him when he's down is a POS.
@Original Jason - Been 10 - 50 million in debt? Sorry to say I can't raise my hand there either :(!
I bet Bernie plays a mean game of beer pong too!
At least he didn't kill anyone or finance dog fighting.
Bernie will bounce back. . .
are there even any So called Browns fans left?
I feel sorry for your suffering...
and I offer this advice... wait till next millenium...
I heard on the radio this morning that about 70% of pro football players run into financial difficulties within 2 years of retirement. Seems crazy - maybe i should go into a new career - financial planner/advisor to the pros!
