WARREN: Police say an apparent thief was found dead inside an electric power substation after trying to use a hacksaw on copper wiring and causing power surges or outages to thousands of homes in northeast Ohio.
Trumbull County Sheriff's Major Thomas Stewart says the male was found electrocuted early Monday and is about 20 years old. Stewart says the apparent motive was copper theft.
Investigators haven't determined how entry was made into the Ohio Edison substation or whether there was an accomplice. The site is surrounded by barbed wire and has warning signs.
FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin says approximately 2,000 homes lost power about 1:30 a.m. and power was restored about six hours later.

As a child, the suspect placed his tongue on 9 volt batteries, as well as inserted metal objects into electrical outlets.
Sorry, laughing my a@@ off at this Darwin winner.
More power to him.
This has got to make the list of most stupid criminals.
This story just made my hair stand on end.
Looks like we are having some pretty stiff competition here in NE Ohio as to who will win the Darwin award this year. I hope this genius did not already add any of his genes to the gene pool.
I wonder what was going through his mind...
I know, about 44,000 volts!
Thunder31,
Many kids have done the 9-volt battery on the tongue thing. When I was a kid and we used them in things like radios and games, we used to test them that way. ZZZZAAAPPPPP still good :)
Shocking news!
THEY FOUND OLD SPARKY!!!!!
Did he look like an over cooked hot dog?
Let's see hacksaw copper electric power substation = zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzxxxxxzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.NOW THAT'S A SPICY MEATBALL.
@Medina Reader & all--LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! snort!

Squirrels, Racoons, and knuckleheaded thieves ...what do they have in common with power outages......similar IQ's !

PERFORMING ANOTHER CUNNING STUNT!!!
SHOCK & AWE!
Der......... I am crook in Akron
that's just natural selection that's what that is
At least this dummy doesn't have to go to court.
Funny
Wonder if anybody asked him:"smoke'em if ya got'em"
Guess trying to cop copper can be a real heart stopper, the "hack" "saw" his chance at "First-Incinerated" in "Oh-my-o-electrocute-sons".
nah im kidding, i dont know enough about his situation to make jokes, i only feel sorry if he's late teens to early twenty with a family he has to feed.
He just made a poor choice, you know those wacky young folks...
Even if he had a family to feed, you'd think he would have had some electrical training in the past. Even if it was just sticking his finger in an outlet as a youngster.
And if he does have family (kids), I hope they get the "smart" genes. Or we may see a repeat performance.
Dumb people should NOT breed.
Holy smokes!!
@ Godfather...they don't know they are breeding!haha
dduckster Duh, this happened in Warren not Akron. But evidently they have stupid people there too.
Yuck.
Just got a "Green Mile" flash back.
You know, when Percy "forgets" to wet the sponge.
I feel bad for the employee that had to investigate the power outage at the substation.
This criminal's favorite song was "Disco Inferno".
As a boy, he loved eating beef jerky, not thinking that some day he would become a chunk of Oberto!
Those Darwin awards are being handed out so fast - my head is spinning!!!
So it's not the volts that kill you but the amps. I was waiting for someone to prove that to me. Thanks kid.
"Sniff" "Sniff"! Does anyone smell hair burning?
Amps,,volts...All I can say is DUHHHHHHHH!!!
Money for schools in Warren!!!
I guess he'll be grounded.
all that effort stealing copper could've been put into a legitimate job...I saw some videos of this kind of stuff in third world countries, never thought anyone would be stupid enough to try it here
I heard he was doing yoga...
Ohm...Ohm...
OMG... a comedian in every crowd..
Good one, Medina!

ROFLMAO! Nice posts, Akron!
"I got tha Powah!"
:0)
Well conceived crime, stealing copper from a substation. I wouldn't think the wire was llive either
Doing the electric slide.
"So it's not the volts that kill you but the amps. I was waiting for someone to prove that to me. Thanks kid."
Nope it's the stupidity that kills !!

Your comments are “reVOLTing”. You see at night its dark out, so the power must be off. It’s natural selection.
You would think that I would be used to it by now, but yet I'm always shocked by the utter lack of compassion on the part of people who post on this site. A guy died, and that really isn't funny. Sure, he was attempting to steal, but that doesn't mean the guy wasn't a human being. Have a heart.
people are sick of hearing these stories about these "poor souls" who are out of luck and have to steal to get by. no one wants to hear it anymore. and to be dumb enough to break into a substation. why not try to get a job, instead? everybody knows it's not the easiest thing to do, but all the rest of us try. these types don't want to try, to work, to struggle. they want a quick, easy target. it didn't work this time and that's why people are making jokes. they are sick of hearing it.
@ PayAttention
Go preach elsewhere-and if you are so "shocked" by the comments, why do you keep looking at the site? This is just like TV-if you don't like it, you don't have to view it.
I just wonder if the funeral home that is handling the arrangements will give the family a discount-after all, he is "half" cremated.
SHOCKING!
It's the current that kills
The sad thing is,his family will end up suing Edison for making it easy for their son to get in there and do that..that being said..LOL@ all you!!!
This is "#2" in the 3 pack with Billy Mays.
Speaking of him..what a bad week for him to die..he's not getting any coverage at all .I think the 3 pack is for famous people isn't it?
SHOCKING story. :)
most of these ppl our cowards that why they show no feeling toward death yeah it was stupid for him to do what he did but he died let him rest in his on peace i cant wait to get the chance to joke on here when one of you children die
@checkmyfiles
Some people enjoy commenting on the stupidity of others. When I read artciles such as this Im thankful that I am not so ignorant as to try and and hacksaw through live wiring. So I dont feel sorry for him; its so hard to feel pity for people who act so foolishly. Any child should have known it was dangerous to do what he was doing; so why should we feel bad that a grown man wasn't "Bright" enough to keep himself unplugged.
So if commnenting on this man's stupidity makes me a coward; then I'm happy to be a coward who stays alive, than a man brave enough to steal copper wiring that is still live.
@checkmyfiles
Sounds like it is time to ask your Doctor for stronger depression meds if you get yourself that upset about other people's mishaps.
BTW, go back to school & get your GED so you learn what a run on sentence is and the difference between "our" & "are"
Ok, that half-cremated comment was by far, the funniest comment on this subject.
Yet one more thing this kid tried to do but failed. He just made the world a little safer. His next victim may have been "joe" citizen.
Now thats what i call negative energy.
Maybe he'd still be alive if had been grounded this morning
Can we start a reality game show, were we drop off criminals in the middle of a sub station with hacksaws and see how many make it out alive. They could make $$ off it and get rid of a few criminals too. Only child molesters, murderers, and rapist. Sorry about my spelling and grammer, I know how you all love to flame people about that.
Oh well, if you try to steal from Ohio Edison, you will fry!!!
Thats why my bill with ohio edison is so high
that wasn't funny Stuck, I'm sorry.
Checkmyfiles... Hah... you act like a 5 year old. Omg you jerks! Im gonna laugh when you kid dies!
Grow up and learn to take life less seriously, we will all be dead soon enough.
Scratch his name from the list of potential repeat offenders.
Uber-Duh.
I must say the commenting seems energized today. Now that’s out of the way. There is another story on ohio.com of a young Girl drowning. That is a tragedy. This is pure stupidity. There is a huge difference. Copper thieves www.whsalisbury.com.
I would like to let everyone know that if I go out in a blaze of stupidity. It’s OK to poke fun at me.
HEY whackamole
My kids wont be dumb enough to steal copper, specialy from a live sub-station. If your kids are then you have failed as a parent. I have no sympathy for theifs who get hurt while stealing.
If they broke into my house for copper they would only get lead.
again sorry for my poor grammer and spelling

You've said:
As a child, the suspect placed his tongue on 9 volt batteries, as well as inserted metal objects into electrical outlets.
Sorry, laughing my a@@ off at this Darwin winner.
The media said he was burned beyond recognition and still we have no name so how do you know who this was? Just curious!
Ohio Edison substations work much faster than the Darque Zone for that "all over" tan.
I wanna play whackamole. That used to be my favorite game at Chucky Cheese
Cav2009 obviously can't recognize sarcasim on this website.....
I guess he quit smoking today.
sorry but the comments are too funny,.....even sent this one to my wife....what an idiot...
btw, it only take .006 amps to make the heart fibrillate (6 milliamps) in 1 seconds time,,,the design of GFI'S receptacles (ground fault circuit interrupter) are designed to shut off in that time! plugs with reset & trip buttons in your garage, bathroom, kitchen, etc
I guess this meth head got what he deserved; stealing from Ohio Edison is not a bright idea but it lit his a@@ up!
at yankeescot:
I'll preach wherever I feel like preaching. "Don't tread on me". My point is, very little good ever comes of people rejoicing in someone's death. Like I've said before, I detest crime, but people living in a civilized community need to act like civilized people. As a community we should acknowledge and punish wrongdoing, but we should also practice compassion. If you believe that death is a reasonable and deserved outcome for a petty theft crime, you might want to relocate to Afghanistan.
yeah but payattention, this wasn't some taliban court order, he did it to himself. No matter how you slice it the guy's a moron.
I agree, most of the comments are funny. BUT you would all be saying something different if it was a child that was killed by electricty. This person never grew up mentally.
Maybe he downed an AMP soda before he downed a bunch of AMPS? Quite fulfilling, eh?
Mr. Hacksaw, he ain't no friend in a substation is he? IDIOT
This was the quickest trip to the "Electric Chair" ever. Saved the citizens millions of dollars in public defense funds, appeals, lodging, meals and education.
BTW, the last item should have been first on his list.
The police think he can still be CHARGED!!!!!
Payattention...you do have a point, HOWEVER, when people are this stupid, it is a little easier to put aside the fact that a person died (I think). And then of course, have some fun with it.
Who in their right mind, would do something sooooo stupid?? Obviously, he thought he could get some cash out of this stunt. But apparently he forgot about the danger involved. He had to climb a fence to get in there. Didn't that jog his memory about safety any??
This dude was S T U P I D !!!
@ PayAttention
Sounds like somebody has no sense of humor. I'm willing to bet you are the life of the party! For someone who hates the comments on here, you sure do come back to this site often. Having a stick up your back side is no way to go through life. Please "lighten up"-pun intended!
peebs02...the really sad thing is, some IDIOT judge will side with the family EVEN THOUGH HE HAD TO CLIMB A FENCE TO GET IN THAT MESS.
Andyman...quit apologizing for your g*d dam grammar. I promise I won't correct you. At least your sh*t is funny.
I'm getting a CHARGE out of reading these comments !
This is a sad story, when someone is killed-- all the comments are about a joke. Death is no Joke. going to jail for stealing but death. Wake up
justcause....
it's really hard to have pitty on those who know better. When you break the law, you have to be ready for the consequences. The dumber the criminal, the bigger the consequences....at least in this case..LOL. NO SYMPATHY!
@ Payattention:
"If you believe that death is a reasonable and deserved outcome for a petty theft crime, you might want to relocate to Afghanistan"
The amount of metals that could have been stolen, the damage done to the sub-station and the number of PAYING customers that lost their power makes this something a bit more than just "petty theft crime".
And folks in Afghanistan would just chop his hand(s) off for a first offense (if it WAS the first). In this country we would have paid for him, his food, medical care, etc. this time, and every time thereafter, that he was or would have been jailed.
I love the jokes and thank goodness that the taxpayers got off cheap for a change! I just hope this experience has "enlightened" him.
@ Payattention:
You seem to have too much "resistance" in your life, maybe you need "enlightened" as well!
SO FUNNY ROFLMAO
@Justcause
Here is a tissue for your issue! LMAO!
Maybe you & PayAttention can form a support group since you are so distraught from the comments. When was the last time either of you "got some"? Perhaps that is your problem?
they would probley ask you "get some what" lol
@ yankeescot
They probably think you mean milk, lmao!
" The site is surrounded by barbed wire and has warning signs."
You're assuming someone this stupid can read?
Maybe payattention and checkmyfiles can petition for a pictured sign of a crack head doing the shuffle.
Any body making jokes about a dead person is sick. And i hope you dont have any kids!Karma is coming!
