COLUMBUS: Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland plans to address the state's budget impasse at an afternoon news conference, heading into a holiday weekend of scheduled legislative hearings.
The Democratic governor and the Republican-led Senate have been at loggerheads over Strickland's proposal to authorize slots-like video lottery terminals at the state's seven horse racing tracks. The plan is estimated to raise $933 million toward the state's $3.2 billion projected deficit.
Among compromises being discussed are that the governor would issue an executive order authorizing slots to insulate lawmakers reticent to cast a pro-gambling vote. The Legislature would in turn put language in the budget that the governor says is needed to ease investors' concerns and attract the largest possible investments.

There's still time to be heard by your state legislators and the governor. Visit www.midcoastperspective.com for help on letting them know that we will not stand for their reckless and irresponsible funding cuts for libraries, school lunches, and mental health.
We must be really desperate consider using gambling as a tool to balance the budget.
Our neighbors in Pa. got desperate in 2004 and they just posted the results of the past years revenue, up 25%. A lot of it is Ohio money. They took in just under a billion dollars. Two of their racetracks are near our border and another one will be opening on aug.9th in Pittsburgh called The Rivers. One more will be built just across the border from Youngstown called Valley View Downs where more Ohio money will leave the state. Check it out at the Pa. gaming control board at www.pgcb.state.pa.us.
What is wrong with you? Want to save trillions of dollars. End these wars. Do not be so easily distracted America. We do not need school funding cuts, closing of business. We need to end these ridiculously expensive wars. Want to instantly save trillions of dollars. End the Wars
