COLUMBUS: A new poll shows that Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's job approval rating has dropped dramatically over the last two months.
The same poll finds that about half of all Ohioans give the governor failing marks on his handling of the economy and the state budget.
The Quinnipiac University survey released Friday says Strickland has a 46 percent job approval rating, down from 57 percent in early May.
That's his lowest rating since February 2007.
The poll also finds that most Ohioans support Strickland's proposal to put video slot machines at Ohio's horse racing tracks. But even more think voters should get they final say.
The telephone survey of 1,259 Ohio voters was taken between June 26 and July 1. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

And we're all surprised by this?
Don't you people remember? We just had to turn around Ohio. So we have received exactly what we wanted.
strickland should stick w/ ice cream
Yeap, Ted has not done a very good job. However, let's not forget our illustrious Bob Taft and George Voinovich. They also contributed to our current state of affluence. Yeap, we are rich, aren't we? We have soooo much debt and debt is good, right? At least, this is what some readers of the ABJ have recently said. So, we are doing just fine.
itcouldalwaysbeworse
ABJ readers were not saying debt was good, but that debt is a normal part of any government (or business or personal) finances. And that the amount of debt in Akron was not out of line with others.
But some ABJ readers think any debt is bad, so long as the person in office isn't somebody they like. But if there guy or party are running things the debt can be justified.
Most Americans would not own a home (or a car) without debt. Most municipalities could not build facilities (libraries, police/fire stations, roads, sewers, etc) without debt.
But you are right on one thing, the prior administrations (including the state senate) are partially to blame for the state of the economy.
maybe we should try and recall him
I honestly believed that Strickland had a great reference point of "what not to do" (Taft) . . . yet . . . he's walking down the basement steps wthout turning on a light!
The trip and the fall is inevitable.
There's no recall provision in the Ohio state constitution for the Governor. But honestly, I don't know if anyone could do much better or worse than Strickland, given the magnitude of the financial crisis that this state and others face over the next few years. I already see Kasich clamoring for his turn; Let him try. He will wish he hadn't. Why would anyone want this job, really?

I agree - it's like accepting a giant gift wrapped box the size of a refrigerator filled with every type of f e c e s known to man.

Mabye Plusqualic will run for Gov. and then all will be wonderful...
I was not part of any poll, but my personal approval rating for the governor has also taken a dive. He disappoints. I was lookng forward to some big changes as we went from Taft to Strickland but, so far, the only notable change has been on the signs at state facilities and constrution sites when the incoming govenor's name replaced that of the outgoing. I hope that viable candidates (I did and do not consider Mr. Blackwell as such) surface.
Strickland has become very " vanilla ". . .
Right! Ted is why Ohio is tanking. It has nothing to do with 20 years of fiscal mis-managemnt at the state level. It has nothing whatsoever to do with a national 10% unemployment rate. It must be So Totally Cool to be that important!
I'm sure it will plummet even more in coming months.
