Portage man beaten at home, robbed of coins

By Beacon Journal staff

A 68-year-old Portage County man was taken by helicopter to Akron City Hospital on Thursday after two men assaulted him on his front porch before entering the house and stealing coins from a collection.

The incident began when Jodi Fetty, 27, of Diamond, went to the victim's Rootstown Township home at 2:30 a.m., said she was having car problems and asked to use the phone, the Portage County Sheriff's Office said.

While the woman was on the phone, the victim went outside because two men — Cortez Oliver, 20, of Fairlawn, and Jonathan Dukes, 23, of Ravenna — showed up on the porch of the Tallmadge Road home.

Oliver and Dukes then beat the victim, entered the home, stole coins and left in a car driven by Darrell L. Dukes, 21, of Ravenna, the sheriff's office said.

An off-duty Ravenna police officer working security at the Giant Eagle on East Main Street in Ravenna helped to apprehend two of the suspects as they were trying to cash in the coins. The officer had been monitoring police radio traffic and had heard that a large amount of coins had been stolen, said sheriff's Lt. Gregory Johnson.

All four suspects face charges of felonious assault and aggravated burglary. They are in the Portage County Jail and are to be arraigned Monday in the Ravenna branch of Portage County Municipal Court.

What a bunch of low life scum.

This is why many people won't help strangers, you never know what is going to happen.

Marc

Posted 02:41 PM, 07/03/2009

Exactly. Anytime I see someone broke down I think about helping them, but then it hits me.. that could be a huge mistake.

Exactly. A couple of years ago I had some crackhead-looking dude knocking on my door @ 3:00 am, saying it was an emergency. I called 911 for him, since that's whatcha suppose to do in an emergency. I was trying to help him with his "emergency"... twasn't my fault they arrested him. *sarcastic grin & shrugs*

This is so sad! Poor guy! People are so evil these days it makes me sick. It's bad enough that these Losers robbed him, but so unnecesary to beat a defenseless 68yr old man. Why did they have to beat him after taking coins that I'm sure took him nearly a lifetime of saving? I hope he's doing ok, and glad these idiots got caught. I hope they spend a lonnnnnng time in jail!!

he probably shouldn't have opened the door and done what VT did and called 911 for the woman. Nothing good usually happens from letting a stranger in your house at 2:30 am

Said but true, nothing good can happen with someone knocking at 2:30am. Sadly, the gentleman probably remembers when helping someone was the norm.

It's time to strike back....Frank Castle style.... This is the other one on the news today. Somewhere else in Strickland's Mecca, they nearly killed an old man and beat his wife before kicking her down the stairs. Fathers, sons, brothers- it is time to man up and start watching just what the he^^ is going on in our neighborhoods. This thug taxation cannot be allowed to reach more innocent people.

Use the punk chick to draw the guy out in the open and pounce on him. Somebody talked about his collection to the wrong people or was in on it with them.

This is really amusing. It makes me wonder if the old geezer was hopeful of some early morning pie!

It would not surprise me if he had guns in the house and a CCW license but because the probably pretty white thing didn't have her balck hoodie on and wasn't he let his guard down.

It makes me wonder if he is one of the poster on this forum who spew out so much garbage.

What goes around, comes around; for some reason (and I have a reason for stating that) I believe this is a payback for this man!

FTR: Diamond Ohio is three towships away from Rootstown unless she really lives in Palmyra who uses Diamond as their mailing address because they don't have a post office; then it would only be two townships away.

Why am I pointing this out? Because there is more to this story than meets the font type.

This story will have legs; just wait and read!!!!

I have delt with other Dukes family member in the past, and it seems that nothing has changed about them. The whole bunch should be put away for ever and a major clean up of the city of Ravenna needs to take place.

They beat up an old man to steal his piggy bank? I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they tell that story in prison. If there is any justice in this world an inmate named "Tiny" will make these punks squeal like a pig.

@ wbwMan:
Dear Troll,

In keeping with your beliefs of "what goes around comes around," and, "this is a payback for this man!" you'd be wise to watch your own back, brother, as you have just outted yourself as a grade-A d-bag, and the Universe will be on your tail any second.

Happy trails. (sarcasm intended)
-Dee

@ Friends and family of victim:
My prayers and sympathies to him & you. These four should be tried for attempted murder, no less. The woman should also be prosecuted for conspiracy.

Love,
Dee

@Marc: you deserve the world in which you're living. Too many old people sit home all day watching the news, and after a while they begin to believe the sensationalist propaganda. One day you'll need help too.

I've been in dire predicaments before, as has my wife, and there are generous people in the world who helped us. I refuse to let criminals rule my life, and if somebody needs to use my phone at 2:30 am I'll let them every time. Not to say that I won't have a .45 in my waistband when I answer the door.

years ago my car broke down on I-76. We had to walk to the houses to get to a phone(this was before cellys). We were on our way to a KSU party. I had my Halloween costume on and my girlfriend was with me. This older woman came to the door and peeked out. She wouldnt let us in but she made a call for me to one of my friends who came and picked us up. I was grateful for her assistance because i surely wouldnt have answered the door at 11pm to where a 6ft black man with spike blue hair and leather was standing. My girlfriend and I were laughing at the situation because back then in the neighborhood off of 76 (tallmadge) didnt have any blacks. It's a sad world because we would have froze to death if that had happened today. Not all black people are out to get you but use your best judgement. Your own safety is your first priorty

Don't unlock your door for or let people into your house at night. Call the police for them. It's that simple. I feel so badly for these trusting, naive souls who keep letting heartless bags of human waste hurt them. It seems as people age, some lose their ability to make good decisions about who to trust. I wish these poor old folks would trust no one.

These people should also be charged for atempted murder because one of the Dukes broke the old man's neck and left him there to die. This old man could be paralyzed for the rest of his life. The way I see these people are monsters and need some heavy time in jail but i doubt that they would learn anything. How could someone beat up an old man? It's just wrong

First, since when is 68 an old geezer? My parents are in their 60's and I don't consider that to be super old and frail. Anyway, Mr. Lowther is a very kind man who was just trying to help a woman out. These are SICK, desparate people who beat another human being with a family for no reason. I'm sure Mr. Lowther when out to see if the guys needed something, not to start anything with them. To me,coming away with a coin collection doesn't sound like a very big amount of loot. Doesn't sound like there was a big inside scam going on to me. Hopefully, Mr. Lowther can make a full physical and emotional recover for this terrible tragedy.

Here's a hate crime for you!! But will never be investigated as such!! Why would you steal a coin collection worth $170? For drugs!!! What the hell is wrong with people? It's sad when you have to tell people not to help others!! Because there is always going to be creeps out there like this!!
