Palin Announces She Will Resign as Alaska's Governor

By Edwin Chen and Simon Lomax
Bloomberg News

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican Party vice-presidential nominee, said she is resigning her office by the end of the month.

Palin, 45, made the announcement today outside her home in Wasilla, Alaska.

"This decision came after much consideration," Palin told reporters gathered at the home. She also said, "I really don't want to disappoint anyone with this announcement."

She did not give specific reasons for her decision or address whether she might seek the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell will assume the governor's office.

Last summer, Palin was Arizona Senator's John McCain surprise pick to serve as his running mate on the Republican Party's presidential ticket.

Political observers were split over whether her decision to resign would serve Palin's purposes should she decide to seek the presidency.

Palin "made the right decision is she is serious about running" for the White House in 2012, said Washington-based independent political analyst Charlie Cook.

"She could be a good governor or she can be a serious candidate for president, but she can't do both well," Cook said.

Rich Galen, a Republican political strategist who once advised former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, said of Palin's move, ''This hardly seems like a well thought-out strategy.''

Stick to the hockey mom thing, Palin. It's obvious your kids need you at home FAR more than we need your empty answers on TV or (shudder) the White House.

One teen mother, and a Downs Syndrome infant. Doncha think you have enough on your plate? Just keep an eye on Russia from your house for us, and let us know if the Commies are comin'. Your 15 minutes are UP.

Imagine, this broad was 9.5 million votes, and a heart beat from the presidency! I'm sure something real stupid will fall out of this move...

You kool-aid drinkers are just jealous because there's no hot democrats in office! I'd rather have her running the country than Obama. It's pathetic how bad you people wanted a black man in office thinkning we'd all change and love each other and the world would love us. Russia has no respect for us, we sit idle as teh brave people of Iran stand up to their dictator, and sleep peacefully in our bed as Mexico and South America explode, and do nothing baout North Korea. WAKE UP

She's made a ton of money now from book and speaking deals, so she thinks she can actually make a run at President....

shehateme, yeah Bush was a great recruiter for Al Queida in Iraq and made even our allies hate us. Talked with more then a few people from Australia and they loved America(always have) but could not understand how a cowboy got voted into office twice....the first time they understood(mistakes happen)

Reality - you're right...it would have been much better had we left Sadam in power and allowed him to continue to slaughter his own people. But hey, why should that bother you, right?

Sure BuckeyeSteve "the people" thats why we went into Iraq.

And then that Mission to Darfur where 300k have been killed by Muslim government backed militias and starvation. Far worse conditions and far higher body count than Iraq has had for a decade under Saddam that why we went there right?...Right?

Oh ya I forgot we never went there "for the people". I wonder why?.....

stop watching fox news and read some foreign press, any foreign press will do. But I suggest more than two sources for any story.

@reality WHere and when did you serve and which branch ?? If it is true I thank you for your service..

Obama is in charge.,. not, as you say..the neoCONS.. Funny thing is.. he has slowed the departure from Iraq..increased manpower in Afghanistan..he could pull everyone out tomorrow if it is all so bad as you say.

Obama will not release the photos and GASP.. is having trouble shutting down GITMO..

The point I am making is that reality bites!!.. He talked the big talk when he was running for the office and you all bought it into it hook, line and sinker..but once he got into office and found out the reality fo the situation.. he double talks and makes excuses..

farwest- Obama has taken the first step in ridding us of a $830 billion train wreck in Iraq, pulling out of the cities. The stock market has shown signs of stabilization from the deregulation of Bush! Point is short, and simple, Bush left office with the worst approval ever because he earned it. It will take years to repair the damage...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, how pathetic!

Palin = a bad pill to swallow for old-school republicans. Sarah is why I left the republican party after 30 years. I want her to disappear. The scary thing is all of the people that thought she was the second coming. Kinda like the Michael Jackson thing. Either you get it or you don't. My radio just did not pick up the Sarah Palin station.

An Alaskan reporter said there are whispers about some kind of a criminal investigation under way involving Sarah. If she has commited some criminal acts maybe she thinks if she gets out of Dodge, er Wasilla she can escape indictment and imprisonment for her wrongdoings. Just another crooked repub pol who thinks she is above the law! She says she is out of politics, sure, and she'll be on the speaking tour raking in the cash while she's still known as a celebrity before her 15 minutes are up and everyone forgets she ever existed. I hope they can get her for whatever she did and lock up her and her husband and goofy kids too for good measure!
